LOADING CATTLE FOR THE CHICAGO MARKET, likely late 1890s. The historic shot was taken in an unspecified Montana town by a photographer whose identity remains a mystery. The view appeared on a stereograph card published by Keystone View Co.
Chicago's Union Stock Yard opened in 1865. It became a huge tourist attraction in the 19th Century. The livestock market consisted of 450 acres covered with pens, railroad chutes, buildings. The nearby meatpacking plants had workers performing one specialized task at each workstation. The organized โdisassembly linesโ were the ag industryโs predecessor to Fordโs clever assembly lines. MILES CITYโS FIRST FLOOD, 1881, by Montana photographer L.A. Huffman. Next to the Books & Stationary store (far left) was Savage & Ninninger, which sold clothing, guns, groceries, and โliquid comforts for the inner man.โ The Savage store was located at the NW corner of 6th Street and Main. An ice jam on the Tongue River, which then ran immediately west of Riverside Park, caused the flood.
Many women and children were evacuated to Carbon Hill east of town. Since the town was founded merely four years prior (when Col. Miles booted out the sellers of alcohol from the original Tongue River Cantonment), nobody knew how high the waters could go. The townโs population was about 700, slightly more than Billings, Montana. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin. Click photo to clarify/enlarge.

MONTANA, August 1939. The temperature was likely near 100. The driver carried a water bag for refilling the radiator. Marion Post Wolcott was a privileged East Coast woman who went to work for the Farm Security Administration during the Great Depression. Montana had more miles of roads per person than any state in the union. The sign alerted drivers that they could take the road to Birney in Eastern Montana to access a telephone.
Fellow FSA photographer Arthur Rothstein wrote: "The trouble with working out here is that you have to travel so far to get anywhere." I grew up in Miles City, 130 miles NE of Birney. Miles City, then 9,600 residents, was the 10th largest city in the state. The nearest larger town was Billings, 145 miles west. Click image to enlarge.
