CRAFTSMANSHIP, 1941. The Quarter Circle U Ranch near Birney had structures with extraordinary precision and craftsmanship. Farm Security Administration (FSA) photographer Marion Post Wolcott took hundreds of photos showing unique and gorgeous corrals, housing, barns, and fencing.
The Quarter Circle U Ranch was a cattle and horse outfit, but during the dust bowl years it added dude ranch operations. City slickers (dudes, both male and female) paid for an โauthenticโ western experience of riding horses and doing some ranch chores.
Birney can be reached by taking State Route 39 south from I-94 near Forsyth. You will pass through Colstrip, Lame Deer, then reach Birney. Text and Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin.

HAULING CARGO, circa 1905. The Crow man wore finery and carried a pipe tomahawk. This was NOT a โstand still and face the cameraโ composition. The horse and the Crow native were in motion on a riverbed path, presumably with frozen ice beneath the snow. The unknown cargo on the travois was protected by hides above and below.
Richard Throssel made the capture while living on the Crow Reservation in Eastern Montana. Throssel set his bulky camera atop a tripod and saved the view on a 6.5x8.5 inch glass-plate negative. My source was a low-res scan found online, but I used Photoshop to enhance clarity as much as possible. If using a PC, click image to better see details. As per normal, the first comment has additional information. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

Why Isnโt This Map in Our History Books?
A Map of Native Tribes in Pre-Colonial North America

Few people realize that the ancestors of Native Americans arrived in North America around 15,000 years ago. Over thousands of years, they built a rich world of diverse communities, complex societies, and distinct culturesโeach deeply rooted in the land.
Before Christopher Columbus set foot in the Americas in 1492, the Indigenous population is estimated to have reached over 70 million. What is now the United States was home to roughly 562 tribes, each with its own language, traditions, and a deep spiritual connection to nature.
Some of the largest and most well-known tribes include the Cherokee, Navajo, Sioux, Iroquois, Apache, Comanche, Pawnee, Choctaw, Mohawk, Cree, and Ojibwaโeach once flourishing and sovereign across vast regions of the continent.
The map below is a rare artifact that captures North America before European contactโa time many refer to as the โGlory Daysโ of Indigenous nations. While Mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya and Aztec fell early to Spanish conquest, many interior North American tribes remained autonomous, some resisting colonial forces well into the 19th and even 20th centuries.
At their peak, Native peoples across the Americas spoke close to 4,000 languages, reflecting a cultural diversity on par with the greatest civilizations in human history.
But the European conquest that began in 1492 brought catastrophe: pandemics, warfare, forced displacement, and slavery caused a dramatic collapse in Indigenous populations. When the United States was founded, Native tribes were officially regarded as โsemi-sovereign nations,โ yet they were increasingly pushed off their lands, silenced, and stripped of their autonomy.
This map is more than a geographic documentโit is a memory of a thriving world erased from most textbooks. It serves as a powerful reminder of the richness, resilience, and rightful place of Indigenous peoples in the history of this landโbefore that history was rewritten by those who came to conquer it.
