She is a member of the Two Kettle Band Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and, and is known in Lakota as Wignuke Waste Win (Pretty Rainbow Woman). Marcella LeBeau, now 101 years old, has accomplished enough in her life to fill three centuries of living.

WARNING. L.A. Huffman captured some of the last views in American history of a village with at least some buffalo-hide tipis. Spotted Eagle’s Sioux camp was photographed during the winter of 1880-81 (not 1879 as listed) near Miles City, Montana.

An eBay auction of the 11x14 inch print requires an opening bid of $500. IF(!) this were a real photographic print individually developed in a photographer’s darkroom and then hand colored, the price would not be insane and might be low. However, the eBay print was mass-produced during the 1970s by Treasure Products on a printing press. Value is typically $15 to $45, plus perhaps a bit more if you like the frame. Few people realize that the ancestors of Native Americans arrived in North America around 15,000 years ago. Over thousands of years, they built a rich world of diverse communities, complex societies, and distinct cultures—each deeply rooted in the land.

Before Christopher Columbus set foot in the Americas in 1492, the Indigenous population is estimated to have reached over 70 million. What is now the United States was home to roughly 562 tribes, each with its own language, traditions, and a deep spiritual connection to nature.

Some of the largest and most well-known tribes include the Cherokee, Navajo, Sioux, Iroquois, Apache, Comanche, Pawnee, Choctaw, Mohawk, Cree, and Ojibwa—each once flourishing and sovereign across vast regions of the continent.

The map below is a rare artifact that captures North America before European contact—a time many refer to as the “Glory Days” of Indigenous nations. While Mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya and Aztec fell early to Spanish conquest, many interior North American tribes remained autonomous, some resisting colonial forces well into the 19th and even 20th centuries.

At their peak, Native peoples across the Americas spoke close to 4,000 languages, reflecting a cultural diversity on par with the greatest civilizations in human history.

But the European conquest that began in 1492 brought catastrophe: pandemics, warfare, forced displacement, and slavery caused a dramatic collapse in Indigenous populations. When the United States was founded, Native tribes were officially regarded as “semi-sovereign nations,” yet they were increasingly pushed off their lands, silenced, and stripped of their autonomy.

This map is more than a geographic document—it is a memory of a thriving world erased from most textbooks. It serves as a powerful reminder of the richness, resilience, and rightful place of Indigenous peoples in the history of this land—before that history was rewritten by those who came to conquer it.
