Midway in my career, I spent three years working for a difficult leader but what was meant to shrink me actually stretched me. It was one of the hardest seasons of my professional life. Yet, it was also when I learned my most beneficial skills: how to lead global teams, navigate change, give and receive difficult feedback, and have the conversations most people avoid.
My clients saw what I was facing and invested in my work on strategic projects around the world. What was meant to shrink me stretched me. That season helped me to get opportunities later that I’m still amazed at.
I’ve truly believe God uses our trials to teach and train us. That’s why the pressure doesn’t get the final word. The lesson does.
It’s funny that I thought I’d graduated from that particular classroom long ago. As the old saying goes, “every round takes you higher and higher” and turns out I’m working on my master’s now!
What has your hardest season taught you?
