⚔️ CUT THE NOISE — A LITTLE FENCING HISTORY!

Who says they didn’t have fencing masks back in the day? 😉

Here’s an interesting example dating to around 1650.

History has a funny way of challenging what we think we know.

And that’s exactly why we keep digging into the sources, asking questions, and questioning assumptions.

The opponent will not give you the fight you want.

What happens when your opponent refuses to engage?

They retreat. Deny measure. Refuse your invitations. Disrupt your timing.

Do you chase? Force the attack? Wait for an opening that may never come?

Or do you create the conditions that make an opening possible?

This is where the Disordinata becomes interesting.

In NF-1: The Retreating Blade, we explore this problem through the Roman/Neapolitan fencing tradition, drawing from historical principles and developing practical solutions for the modern fencer.

Not simply memorizing techniques, but learning to recognize conditions, provoke reactions, and adapt when the opponent refuses to cooperate.

Because good fencing isn’t about forcing the action you planned.

It’s about recognizing the opportunity that actually exists.

That’s the work behind The Retreating Blade.

Study the Art → Test the Art → Develop What Survives.

More to come.

Something new is coming from AFO.

“The opponent will not give you the fight you want.”

That problem sits at the heart of NF-1: The Retreating Blade — A Field Guide to the Disordinata.

This isn’t another collection of techniques.

It’s an exploration of what happens when the opponent refuses to give you the fight you expected—retreating, denying measure, disrupting your plans, and forcing you to solve the problem in real time.

And it reflects a philosophy that will sit at the center of this project:

Study the Art → Test the Art → Develop What Survives.

Go to the historical sources.

Understand what the masters were trying to accomplish.

Take those ideas into your club and put them against resistance.

Keep what works. Question what doesn’t. Adapt where necessary. And continue the tradition of innovation rather than simply preserving it.

Rooted in the Neapolitan tradition.
Informed by the historical sources.
Pressure-tested through modern fencing.

Today, another piece fell into place: we officially secured the artist for NF-1.

The goal is for The Retreating Blade to feel different in your hands, too. Part historical fencing study. Part practical training manual. Presented with the spirit of the old-school adventure modules many of us grew up with.

Artwork is underway, with illustrations targeted for November.

For now:

Do not fence the opponent you predicted.
Fence the opponent who exists now.

Study the Art → Test the Art → Develop What Survives.

More soon.

Why should I train at AFO?

“Why should I come train at AFO?”

Fair question.

My answer is usually pretty simple:

Do you want to become a better fencer?

If you do, come train.

You don’t have to be experienced. You don’t have to compete. You don’t have to fence like us.

Bring the fencing you have.

We’ll help you build the fencing you want.

⚔️ AFO FIGHT NIGHT — THIS WEDNESDAY!

All fencers are welcome.

Come cross blades, meet some new people, and test your fencing against unfamiliar opponents in a friendly, competitive environment.

Afterward, we’ll adjourn to a local taqueria for tacos, drinks, and the inevitable over-analysis of everything that just happened. 🌮😂

If you’re visiting from another school or coming from a different sword discipline, just shoot us a message beforehand and let us know you’re coming.

Different schools. Different traditions. One night to fence.

See you Wednesday. ⚔️
