๐ฃ Paddler's Ed: The Power of the "Torso Rotation"
Ever find your arms feeling completely exhausted after just an hour or two on the water? You might be arm-paddling!
One of the best ways to increase your endurance and efficiency in a kayak or canoe is to master torso rotation. Instead of pulling the paddle solely with your biceps and shoulders, think of your arms as stationary extensions of your body.
The Technique: Plant your blade in the water near your toes, and unwind your torso to pull the boat forward.
The Benefit: This shifts the workload to your core, back, and larger muscle groups, giving you more power with significantly less fatigue.
Next time you are out on Lake Woodlands, give it a try and feel the difference! What's your go-to tip for staying energized during a long paddle? ๐๐

The "Golden Rule" of Paddling Balance: Keep Your Nose Over Your Navel!
Ever feel a bit tipsy when a sudden wave or current hits your kayak or canoe? There is one simple rule our ACA-certified instructors teach to instantly keep you steady on the water: Keep your nose over your navel!
When you lean your head and upper body far out to the side, you shift your center of gravity outside the boat's stable zone, making a flip much more likely. Instead, if you need to look over the edge or brace against a wave, let your hips twist and flex freely while keeping your upper torso centered over the middle of the boat.
Think of your hips as a shock absorberโthe boat can rock underneath you, but as long as your nose stays aligned with your belly button, youโll stay topside! ๐งโโ๏ธ๐ถ

๐ค Did You Know? The Ancient, Waterproof Origins of the Kayak & Canoe!
Did you know that the word "kayak" originally translates to "man's boat" or "hunting boat"?
Invented thousands of years ago by the Inuit and Aleut people of the Arctic, the very first kayaks were built from driftwood or whalebone frames and tightly wrapped in stretched animal skins (like seal or walrus). To make them completely waterproof, the paddlers would coat the seams in whale fat! ๐
On the flip side, the oldest recovered boat in the entire world is a dug-out canoe found in the Netherlands, dating back to between 8040 BCE and 7510 BCEโmaking canoeing a tradition that is nearly 10,000 years old!
From whalebone frames to our modern mobile unit fleet, we love keeping this ancient tradition alive on Texas waters. ๐ฒ๐ฃโโ๏ธ
