Cleary Wrestling is excited to officially welcome Benny Gomez as our Head Assistant Wrestling Coach.

Benny brings a high-level wrestling background and a ton of experience into our room.

More importantly, Benny understands what we’re trying to build at Cleary and the standard we want our guys to operate at every day. He’ll be heavily involved in our training, development and competition throughout the season.

This partnership means a little more to our program. Owner Joel Smith has been part of the wrestling community for a long time, both as a coach and as someone who has continued to give back to the sport.

Joel and JBC Interiors were also instrumental in helping build the wrestling room we get to train in every day at Cleary. His support of Cleary Wrestling started well before this sponsorship, and we have a lot of respect and appreciation for what he has done for this program.

We are excited to get this group moved on campus next weekend!

Cleary University Wrestling adds 17 newcomers for 2026-27: 9 incoming freshmen and 8 transfers, the first class under new head coach Zach Wood, who takes over the program this season.

The freshman class is loaded. C**t Perry won the D4 state title at 138 for Hudson. JC Amrhein won the D4 title at 175 for Manchester. Rasler Warner of Gull Lake is a two time state finalist. Ethan Smith of Brighton placed 3rd at D1 132, Micah Blaker of Adrian placed 3rd at D2 113, Jamari Powell of Waterford Kettering placed 3rd, and Zach Leventis of Howell placed 7th at D1 138 after winning 49 matches. Drake Pollins of Brighton placed 4th in D1 as a junior, and Richard Demar of Lapeer placed 7th in D1 at 285.

The transfer group brings credentials of its own. Phil Lamka, a state champion who was nationally ranked coming out of Fenton, arrives from Campbell. Brayden Bobo, a state finalist out of Hartland, comes over from Grand Valley State along with Brady Vogt. Elan Bekker, a JUCO national qualifier, joins from Henry Ford. Maurice Ames arrives from Siena Heights following the program's shutdown, Brixton Bright joins from Albion, Will Stewart returns to the mat after playing football at Indiana Wesleyan, and Jackson Vogt joins the room as an Army veteran.

We’re excited to launch our 2026–27 Cleary Wrestling Weight Class Partnership.

As our program continues to grow, we want to keep investing in the experience we give our wrestlers. First and foremost, that means quality nutrition, comfortable hotels when we travel, and giving our guys a college wrestling experience they can be proud of.

We also have bigger goals ahead, including opportunities to take our guys to the World Team Trials this spring and continuing to improve our wrestling facility.
