How to be a Great Dance Parent for the Recital

Responsibilities and Duties of the Players:
Your Child/the Dancer:
Focus and prepare for the performance
Warm-up the mind and body
Follow directions of the adults organizing backstage

Studio Owner and Teachers
Too many duties to mention!!
Focus is on the students balanced with the technical functioning of the show
What they cannot be responsible for:
Answering questions or giving directions that have been laid out in emails and notices
Hair and make up of your child
Costume, shoes and accessories organization of your child
Drop off and Pick up of your child (Procedures will have been shared prior to recital day)

The Parent/Guardian
Keeping the dancer calm and yet excited about the performance up to drop off backstage
Packing and organizing all necessary items required backstage
Nourishing the dancer for long term energy (no sugar crashes please!)
Building confidence and a sense of eagerness to share their dancing with all members of the
audience

There will likely be much direction from the studio on the best way to prepare and support your
dancer to be prepared, including checklists of what to pack for backstage
This document is to share a few extra points that may not be considered as something to do
actively but rather more of a “please consider” list created after decades in the industry caring
for the well being of 1000’s of students.

How to be a
Great Dance Parent
on Recital Day:

Duties are Shared: Know what YOU are Responsible to Organize
Child/Dancer: Own emotions (age appropriate), Warm-Up and Performance
Owner/Teacher: Theater organizations, producing/running the show, the dance, warm-up
Parent/Guardian: Packing, planning, driving, hydration and nourishment, keeping your
child happy and stress free, managing the stimulation and likely Hair & Make-Up application
Organization
Costume, Accessories, Shoes, Hair and Make-Up (practice in advance if you are new)
Planning of timing for the day to allow for relaxed meals, preparation and driving time
Nutritious meals and snacks that give long term energy instead of a sugar crash
Please label with initials everything that goes with your child to the theater
Emotional Needs of your Child
Lower your expectations of your child for the day as stress lowers our self management
abilities and heightens our emotional sensitivity and reactivity
Pick your battles: This is not the day for a lesson and growth, except about preparation
Ask how they are feeling and then listen and validate any nerves or fears without trying to
change their state; listen and reassure while avoiding language that could dismiss the
legitimacy of their nerves and anxiety. Being truly heard often releases much of the stress
Stress is easily transferable, so avoid adding stress to your child AND avoid any stresses
yourself so that you are a beacon of calm and relaxation
Give lots of time to organize and prepare to leave the house and plenty of time for the
drive to the theater allowing for an early arrival even with traffic
Avoid scheduling stressful deadlines or events for the day before or day of recital if at all
possible ie. not a birthday party the same afternoon as an evening performance
Moderate the Stimulation on the Day
An overstimulated dancer runs the risk of having a meltdown at the theater, lessening
performance ability and possibly even refusing to perform
Schedule the visit with the additional family and friends coming to watch the theater for
AFTER the recital; this is true for young children as well as older teens
Let you child focus on the task at hand without any added distractions
A Year of Hard Work has gone into Recital Day
The final hours are just as important as the previous months so
keep the focus right up until it is time to sit and enjoy the show!
