With the hot and humid months rapidly approaching, let’s take some time to cover some strategies to prioritize your training and safety during these potentially extreme conditions.
This is my husky, Motley. Motley is built for the winter. He has a double coat of fur that insulates him against even the coldest of winter days. He will quite literally lay outside in the snow until we have to practically force him to come back inside. It should come as no surprise that Motley much prefers the winter cold to the hot, humid summers.
That doesn’t stop him from getting his exercise in during the summer months though. We go on walks and runs on even the warmest days, and he loves it. Here’s a picture of him “lifting” with me on a summer day where it was 92° and 90% humidity. It was brutal outside. If Motley can do it, you can do it too! But let’s talk about how to do it safely:
💧 Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drink lots of water and don’t forget to mix in some electrolytes to replace the salts your body loses through sweat! This should be priority number one.
👕 Wear light, moisture-wicking materials. This helps you stay cool and keeps sweat off your skin.
⏸ Take frequent breaks. Hot, humid days are not the time to push for personal bests.
⚠️ Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Watch for:
• Nausea
• Fatigue
• Dizziness
• Profuse sweating
• Confusion
• Overly high body temperature
While training in the heat can feel rewarding, it doesn’t come without risk. If Motley can do it, we can do it—but stay safe out there. Bring on summer time!

This is David, and his story is a powerful example for anyone dealing with injuries, aches/pains, or just a setback in general.
David had been training with me for 2 months and was making phenomenal progress. Then out of nowhere, his hamstring gave out and led to a nasty strain. Walking was tough, and lower body exercises were off the table.
He could’ve stopped coming to the gym and waited it out. But not David. He showed up to EVERY session, even came in on his own time, and stayed consistent while rehabbing his injury.
We switched up his training to focus on his upper body — and he attacked it with the same intensity and energy as before 💪.
As a result, David made major gains, stayed active, kept his energy and mood up, and didn’t lose momentum. Now that his hamstring is healed, he’s back to full-body training and crushing it even harder 🔥.
Moral of the story: When life throws a setback your way, don’t quit. Adapt. Focus on what you can do. Keep showing up and putting in the work — just like David did.

It’s totally okay to enjoy life and have fun—balance is key!
This past weekend was my brother Nathan’s bachelor party, and it was a blast. Here’s a throwback of the two of us from my wedding. As much as I strive to be a source of motivation for physical and nutritional health, I also believe in letting loose once in a while.
The weekend included some delicious (but not-so-healthy) food, questionable beverage choices, and definitely not enough sleep. Monday hit hard—but I showed up for my workout anyway. Skipping one workout can easily snowball into skipping more, and that’s not a cycle we want to start.
Fun is a part of life, but so is discipline. When things get off track, the best thing you can do is reset and keep moving forward. Your body and mind will thank you.

⏰ It’s time to MAKE TIME
This past Tuesday, I pulled up to the gym at 4:00am sharp — and guess who was already in full beast mode? Shana had been getting after it since 3:30am. That’s not just motivation, that’s dedication.
People say “I don’t have time”... but the truth? You MAKE time for what matters. Shana chose her goals over excuses — and now she gets to enjoy the results while most people are still asleep.
