Greetings,
This information will be sent to all officials registered during the current season in a separate email in the coming days. However, I also want to ensure that anyone who may not have an active or accessible email address on file is aware of these important updates.
KSHSAA has announced several significant changes beginning with the 2026–2027 school year that directly affect officials. Because of the close working relationship between USAWKS and KSHSAA, it is important that all of our officials understand these updates.
1. Mandatory KSHSAA Background Checks
Starting next season, all KSHSAA‑registered officials will be required to complete a background check administered through KSHSAA.
Checks will be valid for five years.
KSHSAA may require earlier rechecks at its discretion.
KSHSAA will cover the cost of these background checks.
For USAWKS officials, this means you will now have two separate background checks, as USA Wrestling already requires a check every two years for anyone 18 or older. The two systems are not integrated, so the checks will not overlap.
Because USAWKS requires all officials age 19+ to be KSHSAA‑certified, this new requirement will apply to all high school graduated officials. The positive news is that the KSHSAA check is infrequent (every five years) and does not add any cost, only a few minutes to complete the required information.
2. KSHSAA Partnership With Smitty Apparel
KSHSAA has entered into an exclusive partnership with Smitty Apparel for officials’ gear.
At this time, the details are limited. However, this partnership does not impact USAWKS uniform requirements, which remain separate from KSHSAA’s. Our required shirt is already produced by Smitty, but KSHSAA’s apparel requirements apply only when working KSHSAA events.
Additional Notes
I am aware that some officials have expressed concerns over the KSHSAA registration requirement. However, this requirement is part of the current USAWKS bylaws. Unless a formal proposal is submitted and approved by the state body, the requirement will remain in place.
KSHSAA registration for the 2026–2027 season is scheduled to open June 1st. I strongly encourage everyone to complete their registration promptly to avoid the additional $20 late fee.
USAW & USAWKS Registration will likely begin around the 2nd week of August if USAW chooses to do the two weeks early routine they started last year.
