We're not breeding just to produce another foal.

We're trying to produce horses that someone will still be excited about years from now.

Athletic, Trainable, Correct, Talented, and, just as importantly, horses we would want to keep ourselves.

Every cross represents a decision about the future.
Which mare, which stallion, which strengths,
which traits are we hoping to carry forward?

There are no guarantees in breeding.
But there is a responsibility to make the best decisions we can with the horses in front of us.

That's what we're working toward with every generation. Building something we're proud to put our brand on.

Every breeder has one.

The horse that wasn't necessarily supposed to stay or become a member of your herd.
Maybe the plan changed.
Maybe something caught your eye.
Maybe you saw something in that horse that you couldn't quite explain yet.
And sometimes those are the horses that end up teaching you the most.

That's one of the interesting parts of breeding.
You can study pedigrees, crosses, conformation, and make your best educated decision.

But eventually, you have to let the horse tell you who they are. For us, it was with our Red Hills Ranch mare Foxie, and now she is one of our very best.

They're the ones that surprise you.

What's a horse you almost didn't keep that ended up becoming important to you?
Tell us below.👇

Finally Friday!

The weeks are busy and the to-do list never ends, but there's nowhere I'd rather be than right here with the horses.

Here's to a little less rushing, a little more time in the saddle, and a weekend spent doing what we love.

Happy Friday from our barn to yours!

‼️Update‼️
Winner of our 2025 Yearling Raffle

“Rosie has been a great horse. She has taught me so much about training horses. I feel like she drew the short straw because she is my guinea pig as I learn how to train a horse from the ground up. Sometimes I have to remind myself that she is only 2, and she has a lot of life ahead of her.

Rosie is the in your pocket type. She wants to be right up in your bubble. She loves her pets and scratches. On the flip side, she has definitely been more of the dominant lead mare type when it comes to other horses. She is in with the mule right now tho, and they have gotten to be pretty good buddies. We have taken things pretty slow in her training as I am learning the ropes. She still has a long way to go, but I would say she has done great with my limited knowledge and experience. She has 8 rides on her and she makes progress every session. I am really hoping to dedicate a lot of time to training her this winter while the weather is nice.

We look forward to some really good years and a lot of miles ahead. We are super grateful to have her be part of our family!”

❤️Throwback Thursday ❤️

A little look back at baby
Dequila.

From the beginning, there was something about this c**t that made us want to keep watching.

Dequila is one of those horses we knew was going to be great for the moment we first saw him.

There’s still a lot of growing and learning ahead of him, but that's part of the fun.

Watching a foal go from a leggy c**t, into the horse you envisioned when you made the breeding cross is a special experience.

The best stories are sometimes the ones that are still being written.

When we're looking at a young horse, we're looking at more than a pretty picture.

We look at balance.

And just as importantly, we watch the mind.

How does the horse handle new things?
How willing are they?
How do they interact with people?

Because a breeding program isn't just about producing something that looks good standing in a pasture.
We're trying to produce horses that can eventually go out into the world and do something great!

Athletic, Trainable, Correct horses with minds we want to live with.

That's the standard we're always working toward.

There is a lot more to a breeding program than the foals you see in the pasture.

•It's the early mornings.
•The mare checks.
•The feeding.
•The planning.
•The paperwork.
•The farrier work.
•The decisions about which mare goes to which stallion.
•The watching, waiting, and hoping that the next foal crop will be everything you envisioned.

And then there are the little moments that make it all worthwhile.
•A mare putting her nose in your hand.
•A newborn foal figuring out its legs.
•Watching a young horse change almost overnight.

This is the part of breeding that doesn't always make it onto social media.

But it's the foundation of everything we're building.

Why did we choose this cross?

Because breeding isn't just about putting two pedigrees together.

It's about looking at the individual horses.
✅What does the stallion bring?
✅What does the mare bring?
✅Where do their strengths complement each other?
✅And what are we hoping to create?

With Kona, we saw an opportunity to combine the performance background and proven ability of WHAT A WAVE with our own Kahlua and Creme.

Kahlua has the kind of personality we value just as much as her show background- sweet, willing, and always wanting to please.

Now we get to watch those two sides come together in Kona.

That's one of the most exciting parts of breeding!
You make the cross, and then you get to see what the next generation has to say about it.

Meet the mare behind Kona.

KAHLUA AND CREME — aka Kahlua.

Kahlua is our 2015, buckskin roan lead mare, and one of those mares who has a personality you simply can't forget.

Kahlua is big personality wrapped up in the sweetest, most in-your-pocket type mare. She was shown throughout Montana before retiring from the show pen back in 2023 to become a foundational breeder here at Marlin Paint and Quarter Horses.

She's the kind of mare that means more to us than just a pedigree. She's been a part of our program, a mare we know and trust, and now she's getting the chance to pass those qualities on to the next generation.

And this year, she gave us Kona.😍

We're pretty excited to see what this mare's legacy looks like through her babies.

“Saturday Nite Fevr”

Some mares have pedigrees you notice.
Some have the talent to back them up.

Saturday has both! 🤎

Sired by COLONELS SHINING GUN ($5 million dollar sire) out of Daydreaming Fever by Magnum Chic Dream, she has the kind of reining pedigree we love building a program around.

She’s spent the past year and a half in training with renowned trainer Jackson Porath at Rock Creek Reining Horses, and we’re excited about what’s ahead for this mare.

The goal? Show pen next year.

And, if everything goes according to plan, we’ll eventually add motherhood to her resume and see what she can produce.

We’re pretty excited to watch this one unfold. 🤎
