We have been guiding film makers and photographers to the bears of Alaska for 5 decades, this is the most unique thing that has ever happened. My guest had been sitting quietly here long before this momma and her cubs came walking by. Momma bear was not worried about us at all.
What happened next was a total surprise.
With all the AI generated garbage out there many may think this is AI, it is not it is real.
When. Coastal Grizzly/ Brown Bear knows a group is in a stationary static position, the bear sees us as predictable. Since the bear knows, we are predictable it is critical not moving or changing locations. The bear will decide how close it’s comfortable getting near our group. Some people with less experience may think that it would’ve been better to have our group of eight people stand up and try to move away. The problem with this logic is the bear knows the group is there their stationary and that’s fine with the bear but as soon as you get up and start moving, you’re no longer predictable for the bear, and that becomes far more of a dangerous situation. The mama bear may even feel threatened by people standing up and moving that close to her cubs.
Over the last 49 years, I have tried both methods multiple times moving away is far more distressing to the bear than holding your ground and staying predictable . Over the last five decades I’ve had many bears walk by within a few feet. My company has safely guided over 10,000 clients into the Alaska wilderness. This is the first time that a bear has actually made physical contact with one of our guests.
In the last few years, the number of new operators offering Alaska bear viewing viewing trips has grown exponentially and there are a lot of inexperienced operators, pretending to be experts. There are several of my competitors that I have a great deal of respect for and do a fantastic job with decades of experience behind them. If you’re gonna take a trip to Alaska to see bears, choose your company carefully and do the research. Personally, I would never go with an operator that has less than 10 years experience in Alaska dealing specifically with bears.
