I had some texts from one of my athletes this morning about kids being home with ice and possibly shortening a workout because they wouldn’t last through the 90 minutes. As parents we’ve all been there. And even if it’s not kids, chances are good you’ve had interruptions that have pulled you in several different directions while you’re trying to workout.
One of the things I’ve noticed with myself and also with athletes I’ve coached is that so often we want to give ourselves an out before we begin - so it’s not a failure or missed mark. I’ve started coaching these interruptions differently and I’ve started to shift my perspective as an athlete as well. Instead of shortening the workout, I said- let’s just start and see how far they let you get. Let’s try for the 90 and if it doesn’t happen, we can figure it out.
Well this genius mom got her kids excited about a movie and then had them take a TV break with the promise if she got her whole bike done with no interruptions, the movie excitement would continue after the bike. Mission accomplished- she got her bike and her kids played and were rewarded with the rest of the movie.
Sometimes it’s all about just starting and seeing what we get … and sometimes we might need some creativity and mom skills to make that happen. I’m proud of this athletes growth, not only as an athlete, but in her mental resilience that she continues to develop.
Sometimes it’s just about getting started and seeing what happens. 💪🏼🙌🏼

Another great weekend with CXP cycles and this group of fabulous instructors from Pickens Easley YMCA in SC made it even better. They brought the energy as we talked about and and some ideas on how to maximize their own teaching styles using the amazing consoles on our bikes. It was a pleasure to spend the day with you today and learn together- I can’t wait to watch you

Failure is really the opportunity for growth, for improvement. The only way you truly fail, is to quit. Keep getting back up. Keep going.

Posted • Someday, I hope you look at me and ask me, “Mommy, what did it take to be successful? Was it worth it? And what’s the secret to winning? “
And I’ll hold you close (or maybe not cause you’ll probably be all old and teenager-y but a mom can dream) and tell you this,
“It took sacrifice, determination, dedication, consistency, and a village of people who believed in my dreams… and even bigger dreams than I could dream at times. It took early mornings and many hours for years. It required both laughter and tears and a relentless spirit. It took your cheers and tiny little fingers helping me tie my shoes.”
“Was it worth it? Absolutely. The pursuit of excellence in my life will always be worth it and anything less than my best effort would leave me with regret.”
“And my child, there is no secret to success. No shortcut, just hard work. But one thing I can tell you for sure is this, in order to succeed you must first be willing to fail- over and over and over again. Pick yourself up and then be willing to be last, be humbled because the company you hold is THAT great, and recognize that there is freedom in being able to walk away from failed attempt and repeat the effort tomorrow with lessons learned from that failure.”
And when strangers ask me why and how, ☝🏼 there it is.
