TUESDAY TEACHER TIPS: DIAPHRAGMATIC BREATHING

*Diaphragmatic Breathing is the foundation for all Pranayama/Breathwork practices. When you understand this basic yet foundational practice, it sets the tone for all breath practices. ⠀

*The diaphragm is a large muscle that sits below the lungs. It helps move air in and out of the lungs.⠀

*Normal breathing is relatively shallow and does not use the full capacity of the lungs. Diaphragmatic breathing is a deep breathing exercise that fully engages the diaphragm and increases the efficiency of the lungs.

BOXED BREATHING;

*When it comes to reducing anxiety, don’t underestimate the power of simplicity. That’s the beauty of box breathing, a technique that can help you calm your nerves merely through breathwork and counting.

*Often called “square breathing” or “tactical breathing,” box breathing anchors your mind to your breath as a form of intentional cadence breathing. Each side of the “box” represents one motion — inhale, hold, exhale, hold — and each lasts for four seconds.

HOW TO DO BOXED BREATHING:
*Box breathing is a simple technique that a person can do anywhere, including at a work desk. Before starting, people should sit with their back supported.
1. Close your eyes. Breathe in through your nose while counting to four slowly. Feel the air enter your lungs.
2. Hold your breath inside while counting slowly to four. Try not to clamp your mouth or nose shut. Simply avoid inhaling or exhaling for 4 seconds.
3. Begin to slowly exhale for 4 seconds.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 at least three times. Ideally, repeat the three steps for 4 minutes, or until calm returns.

SCAPULAR MOBILITY:

✨Why SM?
Your shoulder joint does not act in isolation to create movement in your arm. The muscles of your shoulder and scapula (shoulder blade) act together to create all movements of the arm.
Often the importance of strengthening the muscles controlling the shoulder blade is forgotten. Having a strong, stable, and well moving scapula is important for any activity using the arms, Thus helping us improve our planks & Chaturangas

✨ Injuries that occur at the shoulder can often be traced to poor function or lack of strength in the muscles surrounding the scapula. Therefore strength of the scapular stabilizer muscles is important.

STRETCH BREAK: Shoulder Mobility

💫Think about the number of times you find yourself using technology every day. You’re hunched over a keyboard or craning your neck to answer a text message. In fact, if your habits are anything like that of the average American, you’re likely to spend upwards of five hours on your smartphone every day

💫Over time, seemingly harmless movement patterns (such as rounding the shoulders forward or dropping the chin) cause incremental shifts in your physical alignment. When repeated hundreds of times each day, these small patterns can wreak havoc on your shoulders, neck, and upper back.

💫To improve overall shoulder mobility, try these exercises that focus on releasing the muscles surrounding the scapula, mid-back, and chest.
