I’m getting ready to move, and I didn’t expect the hardest part to be leaving behind a friend I’ve known for three years.

He isn’t officially my cat, but to me he’s Big Guy. Some of the neighbors call him Birdie because of his passion for chasing birds. Long before I ever arrived, he had already claimed this place as home. From what I’ve been told, he’s lived on this property for more than eight years, keeping his distance from everyone until me.

Somewhere along the way, an unexpected bond formed between us. A genuine one.

He spends his days stretched out on my patio furniture, soaking in the sun. He walks beside me and my two dogs, trails us wherever we go, and waits for me when I come home. No matter where he is, the moment I arrive, he comes running just to es**rt me back to my apartment.

Every day, he wanders inside to nap, eat, enjoy treats, and demand affection. He even plays with my dogs as if they’ve always been family. When storms roll in, fireworks explode, or the landscaping crew shows up, he rushes straight to my door, looking for safety. If he ever hides out of fear, I search until I find him but most of the time, he’s already waiting at my patio door.

I love him deeply.

Now, as I prepare to buy my first home for myself and my dogs, my heart feels torn in two. Part of me wants to bring him with us and start our next chapter together. Another part wonders if it’s right to pull him away from the only place he’s ever known.

I don’t know what the right decision is. All I know is that leaving him behind feels just as painful as taking him away.
