Juneteenth represents an important date for African American history and culture in our country. Today is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation came 2½ years earlier on January 1, 1863, many slave owners continued to hold their slaves captive after the announcement, so Juneteenth became a symbolic date representing African American freedom.
