Last year, over 1,000 volunteers gave nearly 12,000 hours of their time to support their community through the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. From sports coaches to advisory board members to event volunteers and more, volunteers make an impact every day in the Y and in the community.
Thank you to each and every Y volunteer and please help us celebrate the volunteers of the year!
YMCA of Greater Indianapolis
The Y: We're for Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility We’re a gym, but we’re not just a gym. Above all, we’re about community.
We’re a charity, but we’re not just a charity. We’re about families, but we’re also about singles, college students, new couples and empty-nesters.
Each summer we are honored to have the Avondale Meadows YMCA serve as a host site for Gleaners Mobile Food Pantry. YMCA staff and community volunteers come together to distribute nutritious food to hundreds of families in need.
Today, we are thankful for a large group of volunteers from staff and community members to elected officials. Thank you for helping us work towards our vision of a healthier, more equitable, more connected community.

Today, we remember and celebrate the life of Dr. Stanley Warren Jr. (pictured on the left), whose lifelong commitment to preserving history helped ensure the legacy of the Senate Avenue YMCA will inspire generations to come.
As a young man, Dr. Warren found community at the YMCA. That experience sparked a lifetime of research documenting the Senate Avenue YMCA and its profound impact on African American men, boys and families in Indianapolis. Through his landmark book, "The Senate Avenue YMCA for African American Men and Boys, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1913-1959," he preserved the stories of a place that strengthened leaders, fostered belonging and advanced opportunity for countless individuals.
Dr. Warren also documented the Senate Avenue YMCA's historic Monster Meetings, where influential voices, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, W.E.B. Du Bois, Jackie Robinson and George Washington Carver, inspired the community through conversations about leadership, justice and hope.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Warren's family, friends and all whose lives he touched. We are deeply grateful for his dedication to preserving the YMCA's history and ensuring its legacy continues to strengthen our community for generations to come.

Barbara's commitment to the Jordan YMCA spanned decades. As a longtime board member, she went door-to-door throughout the neighborhood to help make the Jordan YMCA a reality, believing every child and family deserved a place to belong, grow and thrive. Her leadership, generosity and unwavering belief in the power of community continue to shape our mission today.
In 2023, Barbara was honored with the James L. Kittle Sr. Award, the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis' highest volunteer recognition, in honor of her extraordinary service to the Y.
