One year later, and this hinge-cut ash is loaded with regrowth all the way down the trunk.

I remember sharing the video of this area last year. There were a few Monday morning quarterbacks that chimed in and said my hinge-cuts would never live.

Yes, when we hinge-cut a tree we want to keep as much of the tree trunk attached as possible. But, the crucial layer of the trunk is the cambium layer, which is just below the bark.

The cambium layer provides the flow of food and water to the tree, thus providing the lifeblood to a tree to keep it alive.

That is why a tree dies when it's girdled, the cambium layer is cut, cutting off the lifeblood for the tree.

Our goal when hinge-cutting is to keep as much of the tree attached as possible. But even shallower hinge-cuts, like this tree, can still survive due to the cambium layer being well intact and provide that living thicket or screen we desire.

And when you cuts 100s of trees in a day like I often do, you won't hit a homeroom on every hinged tree, some will die. But even if they do you're still getting sunlight to the forest floor and building future deer habitat.
