I get a lot of questions about growing in bulb crates so here’s the breakdown on why I do it and how I do it.

Why I do it?

For dahlias, I do it because I want to grow more and I’m limited on space. The bulb crates are on parts of my property where I can’t plant in the ground: I use these as an alternative to grow bags, because I also use bulb crates for storing dahlia tubers (so I have a bunch!).

For tulips, I use them because they are WAY easier than digging trenches and planting in the ground. They also protect from voles if you have them… and my tulips grow tall and gorgeous every year so they get plenty of cold hours in there! Now, keep in mind, that if you live in a really cold zone, it’s possible they’ll get too cold and bulb crates won’t be a good option for you.

I plant 2 dahlias per crate. Each crate is about 2 ft wide, 1 fit long and 10-11 inches deep. I see similar size dahlia clumps come out of the crates as I do in the ground. But they do require a bit more water than in the ground.

When I plant tulips, I plant 60-70 bulbs per crate. I put down 1 inch of soil, layer in the bulbs like eggs in a carton and then fill up the crate with soil.

Where to source crates? If you want to get them, your best bet is to search on craigslist or marketplace for bulb crates or produce crates. They may or may not be in your area - I personally source from some locals who deal in a lot of wholesale plant shipping so they have loads.

And that about sums it up… let me know if you have any other questions on crate growing?
