Ten weeks. And what a summer it has been. 🌴☀️

When we opened camp this June, we made a commitment to every Coachella Valley family who trusted us:

We would show up in English. In Spanish. In clinical excellence. In genuine warmth. Every single day.

And we did.

We watched children who signed AYUDA for the first time in Week 1 walk into Week 9 signing it independently — to their friends, not just to adults.

We watched bilingual conversations happen in the peer group — a Spanish-dominant child teaching a peer a Spanish word during play. No prompt. No trial. Just learning from each other.

We watched families exhale — because their child was somewhere safe, bilingual, purposeful, and joyful.

This is why 9 years of KEBM exists in Indio. And we are just getting started.

Volvemos a AYUDA — We're bringing back HELP. 🙏☀️

HELP (AYUDA) was one of the most impactful signs we taught this summer. As your child gets ready to go back to school — it's the most important one to send with them.

HELP / AYUDA in the school environment: ✅ At their desk: AYUDA when they're stuck on a task ✅ In the cafeteria: HELP when they can't open their lunch ✅ On the playground: AYUDA when something isn't working ✅ In any language transition: if they can't find the English word, the sign crosses any language barrier

💡 BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS: → Share this sign with every new teacher — show the video, demonstrate in person → Put a reference card with the sign on your child's communication board or binder → Practice HELP across every setting this week: home, store, park, car → Role-play classroom scenarios: '¿Necesitas ayuda?' — child signs AYUDA

The child who can sign HELP at school is the child who can advocate for themselves in any language.

One of the simplest and most powerful strategies — for ANY household, in ANY language.

Why transitions are hard: → Preferred activities ending feels like loss → Uncertainty about what comes next triggers anxiety → The nervous system needs TIME to shift

The bilingual transition warning system:

⏱️ 5-MINUTE WARNING: 'Five more minutes!' / '¡Cinco minutos más!' ⏱️ 2-MINUTE WARNING: 'Two more minutes!' / '¡Dos minutos más!' ⏱️ TRANSITION: 'Time to clean up!' / '¡Hora de recoger!' [review visual schedule / revisar el horario visual]

Why this works: ✅ Reduces the element of surprise — in any language ✅ Gives the nervous system time to prepare ✅ Works with visual timers so the child SEES time passing ✅ Can be delivered in English, Spanish, or both — the timing matters most

💡 PRO TIP: Be consistent. Use the same warning words every time — '¡Dos minutos más!' should reliably predict the transition.

PAIRING / EMPAREJAMIENTO — the most important thing we do before any instruction begins. 🌴

PAIRING is the process of a therapist associating themselves with reinforcement — becoming a source of positive experiences before making any demands.

A child who doesn't trust their therapist cannot learn from them — in any language.

Pairing at KEBM Indio: 🎮 Following the child's lead — in their language, with their preferred activities 🎁 Delivering free reinforcement — preferred items, play, and fun with NO strings attached 😄 Being fun and genuinely enjoyable to be around — en inglés Y en español 🗣️ Using the language the child is most comfortable in — especially in early sessions 🚫 Avoiding demands completely until the relationship is established

For bilingual Coachella Valley families, pairing also means: → Building trust in the language of home — often Spanish → Matching the child's communication comfort zone — not ours
