ON THIS DAY IN MOUNTIE HISTORY - Sept. 21, 1929 - 97 years ago today - Mortimer Jordan at Shades-Cahaba

In the 1929 season opener, Shades-Cahaba hosted Mortimer Jordan in the first game of Robert R. Hardy's five year tenure with the Mounties. Mortimer Jordan had shut out Shades-Cahaba the previous season, which the Mounties remembered coming into the game. Carroll Ireland scored the game's first points for the Mounties from 5 yards out right before the end of the first quarter, for a 7-0 lead. Ralph Ward received a pass from Kennedy and went 25-yards for a score in the second quarter, for a 13-0 lead. The second half was scoreless, and the Mounties came away with a season opening victory over the 'Blues'. Shades-Cahaba would finish the 1929 season with a record of 3-4-1.

ON THIS DAY IN MOUNTIES HISTORY - September 20, 1963 - 63 years ago today - Shades Valley at Fairfield

The Mounties came into the second game of the year looking for their second straight win to open the season, following a season opening win over Jones Valley. The Mounties were coached by William 'Bill' Legg, who previously was an assistant at Shades Valley under longtime coach Gri Cashio. A visit to Fairfield, one of the Mounties fierce county rivals at the time, was another tough test for Legg and his Mounties. Shades Valley had bombed Jones Valley for 40 points the previous week, yet Fairfield was 2-0 and had beaten Berry and John Carroll and only allowed 7 total points between them. A defensive struggle was expected, and that's what they got. Shades Valley would go into Fairfield, and the defense would bend but not break, not allowing any points. The Mounties could only muster a field goal late in the game, but that proved to be enough as they defeated the Tigers, 3-0.

Shades Valley would go on to finish the year 6-3, good enough to represent the county in the yearly Dental Clinic held at Legion Field. The Mounties would face a Tarrant team that had defeated them during the regular season, 7-0. The Dental Clinic was another story, as the Mounties and Wildcats played to a 13-13 tie, and the Mounties finished the 1963 season 6-3-1.

ON THIS DAY IN MOUNTIES HISTORY - September 19, 1986 - 40 years ago today - Shades Valley at Berry

Coming into the third week of the 1986 season, the Shades Valley Mounties were 1-1 on the year, after an opening win over Erwin and a loss at Tuscaloosa County. Up next was a long-time rival, and a visit to the Berry Bucs. Regardless of the Bucs 0-3 record coming into the game, no game against the Bucs was ever taken lightly with their longtime coach Bob Finley at the helm. Berry also was hosting the Mounties in their first home game of the year.

Coach Robert Higginbotham had his Mounties ready for the game, as a strong defensive effort shut out the Bucs, and only allowed the Bucs 91 total yards of offense. Shades Valley would score on a 48-yard pass from Tommy Dickinson to Patrick Hampton, a 2-yard run by Chris Smith, and a 30-yard field goal by Jay Hogewood. Shades Valley would defeat their rival Bucs by a 17-0 score to move to 2-1 on the season and dropping the Bucs to an uncharacteristic 0-4. The shutout of Berry would be the second of four shutouts the Mounties would post all season.

Shades Valley would finish the season as Area 11 champions, by defeating the Vestavia Hills Rebels for the first time since 1977, in the final regular season game. They would lose in the first round of the playoffs to a Jess Lanier team that finished as 6A runner-ups. The Mounties final record for 1986 was 6-4.
