The Wisconsin DNR is asking Enbridge to stop work on a temporary Line 5 bypass near Saxon, saying the company began construction without the necessary state approvals. The bypass is being built near the site of last month’s natural gas liquids leak in Iron County.

Enbridge is temporarily pausing construction on its Line 5 reroute following last week’s natural gas liquids leak near Saxon.

The 48-hour safety stand-down comes after the Wisconsin DNR asked Enbridge to halt construction until the leak is resolved and steps are in place to prevent future spills.

Line 5 remains shut down as crews continue working at the site of the leak.

Fundraising continues for designing and building the trail.

We are pleased to share that we are within $500 of raising the $175,000 needed to purchase the Soo Line railroad grade between Hurley and Montreal! A new anonymous donor contributed $25,000 this month, bringing us up to the finish line. Once the City of Hurley owns the railroad grade, ICORE will lead the effort to design and build the new 3-mile trail, eventually extending the Iron Belle Trail west to Montreal. To get a jump start on trail construction, yet another anonymous donor is offering a NEW MATCH CAMPAIGN! They will donate up to $15,000, matching donations through September 2026. Except for the final $500 to purchase the land, all new donations will be used as local match for grant applications to design and build the trail.

Tune into “In Our Range” at 8:30 tomorrow morning. Our guest will be Mary Hansen with the Awkward Stage Drama Club in Ironwood.

The Awkward Stage Drama Club is a 501c3 non-profit bringing kids from grades 4-12 together to learn about and work together on all aspects of theater production.

From acting to directing to tech and publicity, the club has something for every student. The Awkward Stage Drama Club has been a part of our community for 14 years and is open to all kids in the area.

The ASDC is hosting an open house on September 3rd and 8th at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood. Student and adults are encouraged to attend.

An unoccupied semi-truck rolled into an excavation site during work on Enbridge’s Line 5 near Saxon Tuesday, striking a natural gas transmission line and releasing natural gas liquids. Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution, and no injuries were reported. The Wisconsin DNR says the amount released into the air is still being calculated.
