Did you know that the founder of De Campo Jose Diaz Caballero was a fan of Western movies and often compared his style to the gunslinger "quick draw".

"Don't let the old man in", Eastwood shared this advice with country singer Toby Keith while playing golf, explaining that he stays active and keeps working instead of letting the mental and physical weight of aging take over. He believes you must "stay active, alive, happy, strong, capable" and reject the idea that growing old means you have to stop creating or setting new goals. He refuses to allow a critical, bitter, or complaining attitude into his mind.

In Honor of a Legend: Remembering Grandmaster Jose D. Caballero.

​Today, August 7, we commemorate the birth anniversary of the founder of De Campo Uno-Dos-Tres Orihinal, Grandmaster Jose Diaz Caballero (August 7, 1907 – August 24, 1987).
​Born in Barrio Ibo, Toledo City, Cebu, GM Caballero revolutionized FMA by creating a system stripped of theatrical fluff and built purely for real-world combat. Frustrated by ceremonial exhibitions, he engineered a fast, precise long-range (Largo Mano) art centered on three critical targets—the eyes, the hands/elbows, and the knees.
​Known for his lightning-fast delivery and undisputed dominance in unarmored Juego Todo duels, GM Caballero tested his craft against the fiercest fighters of his era and remained undefeated. His reputation was so formidable that the legendary GM Filemon "Momoy" Cañete once told him: "Dili ko makig duwa ana imong eskrima Joe, pangpatay man nag sawa." ("I won't play around with your Eskrima, Joe—it's meant for killing snakes.")

Years ago, Manong Eric Olavides made a visit to Manang Amparo Lebumfacil, the wife of his teacher, Manong Jose Diaz Caballero, founder of Eskrima de Campo 123 Orihinal.

Though Manang Amparo was already advanced in age and her memory had begun to fade, she still recognized Manong Eric the moment she saw him.

The visit brought back the memory of when the couple had told Manong Eric, in their own words, that they considered him a son. That bond between teacher and student was the reason Manong Jose chose to pass on the deeper knowledge of his arnis system to Manong Eric.

It is a reminder that behind every great teacher, there is often a mother's heart at work. On this Mother's Day, we extend our warmest greetings to all the mothers in the arnis community—the women who train alongside the men, and those who have supported, encouraged, and quietly shaped the warriors in their lives.
