Thank you all for all of your help in preparing your swimmers for fantastic meet against one of the league's top teams, the Woodbury Waves! Our meet against the Woodbury Waves was incredibly fast, fun, and filled with exceptional swims from everyone! The Woodbridge Tritons combined to win 41 first places out of 68 events, achieved 141 time improvements, broke a team record from 2012, and we had several new swimmers achieved Irvine Swim League Championships qualifying times! All of these incredible achievements helped us accomplish a TEAM VICTORY (4-0!!). We continue to make significant improvements every week- both in speed and in team spirit, and I am incredibly proud of everything we've achieved so far. We are a mere three weeks away from the Irvine Swim League Championships and we are going to continue focusing on the little things in practice that are going to make us a force to be reckoned with on August 12th...
Breaking the first team record of the year for the Woodbridge Tritons was the Mixed 15-18 Freestyle Relay Team of Robin Koehler, Makati Pham, Jake Tsai, and Rin Hoshina. These four lowered our previous team record of 1:34.30 from way back in 2012 with a time of 1:33.66. I believe this may be the top time in the league this year... Get ready for some fireworks at Championships.
Woodbridge swimmers winning all three of their individual events were:
Rin Hoshina (15-18 Girls 50 Butterfly, 50 Backstroke, 50 Freestyle)
Lucien Huang (9-10 Boys 50 Backstroke, 100 IM, 50 Freestyle)
Isabelle Parker (13-14 Girls 50 Backstroke, 100 IM, 50 Freestyle)
Addison Pearson (11-12 Girls 50 Butterfly, 50 Backstroke, 50 Freestyle)
Woodbridge swimmers winning two individual events were:
Thomas Ahn (13-14 Boys 50 Butterfly, 100 IM)
Holly Fishburn (13-14 Girls 50 Butterfly, 50 Breaststroke)
Josephine Ikkanda (5-6 Girls 25 Butterfly, 25 Freestyle)
Albert Li (7-8 Boys 25 Backstroke, 25 Freestyle)
Maya Nishizaka (13-14 Girls 100 IM, 50 Breaststroke)
Makati Pham (15-18 Boys 50 Butterfly, 50 Backstroke)
Kate Watanabe (5-6 Girls 25 Backstroke, 25 Breaststroke)
Woodbridge swimmers adding a single first place were:
Jayden Cho (9-10 Boys 50 Breaststroke)
Robin Koehler (15-18 Boys 50 Freestyle)
Ella Lee (9-10 Girls 50 Backstroke)
Everett Muzzarelli (5-6 Boys 25 Breaststroke)
William Watanabe (7-8 Boys 25 Butterfly)
We continue to focus on improving our skills in practice and it's always amazing to see the swimmers implementing these new skills in the pool at competition and dropping time while doing so. We had the most time improvements of any meet this season which is amazing for a meet this late in the season where we already have entry times. Something about the "Battle of the Woods" always brings out the best in us. I was amazed at how many swimmers were dropping time AND focusing on the skills that we worked on in practice this week. This week we put a huge emphasis on tight streamlines and dolphin kicking and I was amazed at how many 5-8 year olds dove in and blasted their dolphin kicks underwater! 15-18 Year olds... we have some work to do. You could stand to gain some valuable insight from watching the youngers (especially Elena Gonzalez) flying through the pool. Woodbridge swimmers looking good in the water and dropping time in all of their individual events were Thomas Ahn, Jo Lee Burkhartsmeyer, Kate Carroll, Kyla Chien, Holly Fishburn, Joji Freger, Elena Gonzalez, Lainey Gramlich, Rin Hoshina, Lucien Huang, Jason Ko, Ella Lee, Ivan Lee, Sayiid Martinez Gutierrez, Maya McBreyer, Dylan Oh, Ashley Park, Isabelle Parker, Addison Pearson, Brady Pearson, Makati Pham, Jake Tsai, Chloe Watson, and Noa Weber.
We had many significant time improvements this meet, so narrowing down this sea of huge improvements into just two Goldent Trident awards was challenging. For the girls, we have awarded the Goldent Trident to Maya McBrayer! Maya continued to make tremendous improvements at her second ever swim meet and dropped 7 seconds in the 25 Backstroke and 7 seconds in the 25 Freestyle! Keep working hard and we'll try to get those qualifying times! On the boys side, our Goldent Trident award goes to Sayiid Martinez Gutierrez! This young man is already an incredibly fast swimmer- so dropping massive amounts of time is challenge... but that didn't stop Sayiid from dropping over 2 seconds in the 50 Butterfly, almost 1 second in the 50 Freestyle and nearly 5 seconds in the 100 IM! Fantastic job Sayiid!
With so many amazing swimmers achieving so many amazing swims... it was another tough week to determine our Swimmers of the Meet. We looked at time improvements, qualifying times, high finishes, and ultimately came to a decision. On the girls side, we had one swimmer who impressed me- not only with her three time improvements and qualifying time in the 25-Yard Butterfly, but also with her team spirit and impressive wielding of the trident. Our first Queen Triton award for Swimmer of the Meet goes to 6-Year old Kyla Chien! Kyla dropped nearly 9 seconds in the 25 Butterfly to achieve an Irvine Swim League qualifying time, and she dropped an additional second in the 25-Yard backstroke to edge ever closer to the qualifying time. In addition, she was observed to be holding the King's Triton, cheering for her teammates and being an amazing teammate. Congratulations Kyla! We also came together to award the season's first ever "Old Lady Queen Triton" award to Coach Rin Hoshina! Not only was she out there absolutely blasting her events with three time improvements, three first place, AND a Team Record... she was out there providing solid advice to all of the kids before their races and being an amazing coach and teammate. Congratulations Kyle and Rin! We will award you the coveted Golden Trident at practice on Monday.
On the Boys side, we have awarded the Golden Trident to a 7-8 Boys who went out there and demolished his best times and had several breakthrough swims. The King Triton award for our meet against Woodbury goes to Albert Li! Big Albert is a workhorse in practice, and pushes every lap to try and improve his skills and his speed. At this meet, he dropped close to a second in the 25 Breaststroke and almost a second in the 25 Freestyle to crack into the 15-second range for the first time. This is a huge milestone that not many 8 year olds achieve! In addition to his amazing swims, he is also an amazing teammate who brings a lot of energy to swim meets and to practice which motivates his teammates. Congratulations Albert!
Fantastic meet everyone! I want to commend all of the parents for rocking their RED Triton merch at the meets. We are a tough to miss and that red really pops! Thank you to the whole board for all of their help, thank you to all of the coaches who were out there helping the kids, and thank you to Woodbury for hosting a fantastic meet. I also want to thank Robbie Gourley for being an amazing teammate and cheering on his teammates with a level of enthusiasm that I rarely see! You are an awesome teammate and you left it all in the pool- Great job Gourley! I will bring you some Airheads to practice tomorrow for being the loudest Triton supporter!
