See a loose screw on your instrument? That's a good catch.

Before you grab the nearest screwdriver and tighten it as much as humanly possible, remember that some screws on woodwind and brass instruments are part of very precise adjustments.

Too tight can cause problems too.

Your instrument case isn't just for carrying your instrument. It's protection.

Make sure your instrument is sitting properly inside before you close it. Don't cram music, books, snacks or anything else on top of it just because there's technically room.

And please use the latches. A good case can't do its job if the instrument falls out of it.

Before you blame the musician it really could be the instrument. That is unless you catch then dropping their instrument out of the band bus or throwing it into the car, then it could be the musician and the instrument! 🫣

Seriously though a leaking pad, bent key, misalignment or valve problem can make notes harder to play and tone harder to control. If something that used to be easy suddenly isn't, don't automatically assume more practice is the answer.

The instrument might be trying to tell you something. Listen. 👂

You know how the keys, valves and slides normally feel.
When something changes, that's the time to have it checked.

You don't have to know WHAT is wrong.
That's my job and I've been at it longer than the internet has existed!

And if it's chipped, cracked or warped?
Thank it for its service and let it go. Or make some funky art piece out of it. Either way, it needs to be changed out.

That little mouthpiece cap in your case has a real job.
➡️Use it.
It helps protect the reed and mouthpiece when you're not playing and can prevent accidental chips and damage. It also keeps the cheese from your Doritos that I've previously mentioned shouldn't be in your case. 🤢

School is back, rehearsals are happening and instruments are getting used regularly again.

This is when little problems start making themselves known.

A key feels different. A valve gets sluggish. A cork gets loose. Something starts making a noise it didn't make before.

Don't wait for "different" to become "broken."
Around here we work on a first come, first served basis, and the repair bench gets busy in the "fall" season.

Before rehearsals, concerts, and football games fill the calendar, make sure your instrument is ready too. If something doesn't sound right, feel right, or move right, don't wait.

Starting the year with an instrument in good playing condition makes learning, practicing and performing a whole lot easier.
