EXERCISE SCIENCE EXPLAINED | #2: MOTOR UNITS

Ever wonder how your brain actually tells your muscles to move? 🧠💪

It all starts with motor units.

A motor unit is made up of one motor neuron and all the muscle fibers it controls.

When you need to produce force:

➡️ Your brain sends a signal
➡️ The motor neuron carries that signal
➡️ Muscle fibers contract
➡️ Your nervous system recruits additional motor units as more force is needed

This is one reason strength training isn't just about building bigger muscles. Your nervous system also becomes better at coordinating and recruiting the muscle fibers you already have.

And that matters for strength, power, athletic performance, and movement.

That's the science behind the work we do at SCC Fitness.

🧠 EXERCISE SCIENCE EXPLAINED | #1: MUSCLE CONTRACTIONS

Ever wonder what’s actually happening inside your muscles when you exercise?

Every rep you perform involves your muscles producing force—and there are three primary types of muscle contractions:

💪 Concentric: The muscle shortens while producing force.
⬇️ Eccentric: The muscle lengthens while producing force.
🧱 Isometric: The muscle produces force without changing length.

Think about a squat: you're using all three during a single rep!

Understanding the science behind movement can help you understand why we train the way we do at SCC Fitness.

This is just the beginning.

👉 Follow along as we break down exercise science into information you can actually use.

🧠💪 YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM MATTERS MORE THAN YOU THINK!

Strength isn't just about your muscles. Your nervous system plays a major role in how you produce force, coordinate movement, maintain balance, learn new skills, and improve performance.

Our latest SCC Fitness blog breaks down the connection between your brain, nervous system, and training—and why quality movement and smart programming matter.

💪 THE KINESIOLOGY OF A PUSH-UP

The push-up looks simple—but biomechanically, it’s a complex, multi-joint movement requiring strength, stability, coordination, and control.

Here’s what’s happening:

🔴 PECTORALS — Horizontally adduct the shoulder and provide much of the force during the push.

🔴 DELTOIDS — Assist with shoulder movement while helping stabilize the joint.

🔴 TRICEPS — Extend the elbow, helping drive your body away from the floor.

🔴 CORE — Stabilizes the spine and keeps your body moving as one unit.

🔴 SCAPULAR & SHOULDER STABILIZERS — Help control the position of the shoulder blade throughout the movement.

The push-up isn't just a chest exercise.

It's a coordinated movement involving the shoulders, elbows, trunk, and lower body working together.

👉 Better movement mechanics = better force production, control, and strength.

At SCC Fitness, we believe understanding how the body moves is just as important as simply moving it.

Train smarter. Move better. Get stronger.
