Let's all take a step back on this rainy day and appreciate the history behind Jersey Meadow Golf Club!
The land that is now Jersey Meadow Golf Club played a very different role in shaping our community.
In the early 1950s, this property was part of a 1,200+ acre dairy operation known as F&M Dairy, owned and operated by Clark W. Henry and Leroy Kennedy. At the time, it was home to one of the largest herds of Jersey dairy cattle in the world—which is exactly where the name Jersey Village originates.
F&M Dairy wasn’t just a working ranch—it was also a destination. Visitors could come watch cows being milked through glass viewing areas and even enjoy fresh dairy products like ice cream on-site. It was a landmark for the area and a key part of its early identity.
As Houston expanded, Henry and Kennedy began transitioning the land into residential development around 1954, helping establish what would soon become the City of Jersey Village, officially incorporated in 1956.
That same year, the property took on a new purpose.
Jersey Meadow Golf Course was built in 1956, originally designed by golf course architect Bob Simmons. It began as a private course for employees of Cameron Iron Works, one of the region’s major industrial employers at the time. The course quickly became a centerpiece of the growing community.
In the late 1980s, the course underwent a redesign led by architect Carlton Gipson, helping modernize the layout and shape much of the course you see today.
By the late 1990s, the future of the property was uncertain, as development pressures increased. In response, the City of Jersey Village made a pivotal decision in 2000 to purchase the golf course, ensuring it would remain a community asset rather than be lost to development.
This decision wasn’t just about golf—it was about:
• Preserving green space
• Supporting flood control for the surrounding area
• Maintaining a buffer from Highway 290
• Protecting a key part of Jersey Village’s identity
Today, Jersey Meadow Golf Club stands as more than just a place to play. It represents the full evolution of this land—from one of the largest dairy farms in the world… to a private industrial course… to a modern, city-owned facility serving the community every day.
The next time you step onto the first tee, you’re not just playing a round—you’re walking through a piece of Jersey Village history.
