I'm leaving this review from my Range Heritage page rather than my personal profile because I intentionally keep this part of my life separate from my other professional work. Range Heritage represents my journey as a new student of shooting and marksmanship, and after today's experience, I wanted to make sure I shared it.
My training session with Jim at Sheepdog Marksmanship Training went far beyond what I expected.
We started with something as fundamental as my grip, and I was surprised by how much of a difference a few seemingly small corrections could make. From there, Jim progressively built on each skill throughout the session.
What impressed me most about Jim is not simply the amount of knowledge and experience he has — it's his ability to know what to teach, how to communicate it, and when you're ready for the next step. He was patient, extremely observant, and constantly making small adjustments based on what he saw. Nothing felt rushed or forced. Each exercise naturally prepared me for what came next.
I arrived with basic range experience but essentially no formal defensive or tactical training. By the end of the session, I was drawing, engaging multiple targets, incorporating movement, and doing things that I honestly would not have imagined myself doing when I arrived that morning.
The location itself deserves to be mentioned as well. The range is completely isolated and free from distractions, which makes it an ideal environment for one-on-one training. It truly feels like having an entire range dedicated to exactly what you're there to learn. The setting allows you to focus completely on the instruction, the drills, and your own progress. For this type of training, the location is perfect.
More importantly, I left with greater confidence and a much greater appreciation for how much there still is to learn. Jim didn't just help me shoot better; he gave me a foundation for practicing with purpose instead of simply going to the range and putting rounds downrange.
Five stars without hesitation. Jim is exceptionally knowledgeable, but what separates him as an instructor is his ability to transfer that knowledge at the right time and in a way the student can actually apply.
I highly recommend Jim and Sheepdog Marksmanship Training. If you're serious about learning rather than simply shooting, train with Jim.
I'll definitely be back.
