If you already have backcountry and avalanche experience and are considering recreating in glaciated terrain, this is your course! Join SheJumps and Mountain Edventures in the mountains with a group of local women as they learn practical skills for glacier travel and rope rescue on this weekend course. Will include a day of 'dry land’ training to learn the knots, and basic systems, and a day of practicing in the mountains.
March 6-7, 2020. Juneau, AK
$300
ONLY 4 SPOTS LEFT
SheJumps partnered with Mountain Edventures to bring you a course for women who already know how to move efficiently in the mountains on their skis or splitboards and want to focus on basic avalanche safety and companion rescue. This non-traditional avalanche training will include some recommended pre-course online material and two field days to practice companion rescue, avalanche terrain management, and learn signs of snow instability. This weekend is more focused on avalanche hazard and rescue, and less about the broader range of backcountry skills, than our intro backcountry weekends.

In preparation for our first avalanche courses of the winter, we want to share this helpful tool for areas like Southeast Alaska which don't have an avalanche bulletin.

Avalanche Canada's Dangerator tool is designed to help beginner to advanced backcountry travelers come up with a baseline avalanche hazard for the areas they're traveling in.

AvCan's website does a great job of simply describing how to use the tool, so use this link to watch the short video and see how you and your group can incorporate this into your daily process today! www.avalanche.ca/dangerator

Learn more about the North American Avalanche Danger Scale and its use by watching this video: https://avalanche.org/avalanche-encyclopedia/-scale

If you are interested in avalanche training this winter, reach out to us at mountain-edventures.com/contact-book.

Today we want to recognize one of our talented instructors. Kanaan Bausler!

In the winter, Kanaan runs our High School Youth Camps and helps teach our other private and group courses. He is also an Avalanche Forecaster for Alaska Electric Light & Power, a founding board member of the Coastal Alaska Avalanche Center, and a guide for Alaska Powder Descents Heli-skiing. As if that is not enough, in the summer he teaches for the Yakutat Surf Club (yakutatsurfclub.com/kanaan).

Kanaan is teaching our upcoming Youth Intro to Backcountry course in December, and the Youth Avalanche Awareness Course over MLK weekend.

We still have space in both courses, so head over to mountain-edentures.com/contact-book to schedule some Kanaan time.

This holiday we are especially thankful for our talented instructors, the guides of Alaska Powder Descents Heli-skiing! Thanks to you we can provide Juneau's backcountry community with world-class courses!

11/11/2022

It’s the time of year to underscore the importance of backcountry safety and education. When Eaglecrest is not operating, the ski area is backcountry. It is necessary to educate yourself before heading into unmitigated avalanche terrain. There are no rescue services available.

Be sure to test your beacon and get backcountry prepared at our new checkpoint on your way up the mountain. You can also refresh at home, before heading up the hill with Know Before You Go’s online programs. Although a great resource, these are not a substitute for an in-person, local avalanche course. Get educated locally with Mountain Edventures or Alaska Avalanche School and take advantage of online resources like Coastal Alaska Avalanche Center and American Avalanche Institute.

Alaska Powder Descents Heli-skiing, SheJumps and Mountain Edventures will all have booths at the Juneau Ski Swap this Saturday.

02/27/2021

CBJ has had to issue a rare warning to evacuate the Mt. Juneau Urban avalanche hazard areas tonight due to a sensitive weak layer and forecast dramatic loading. https://juneau.org/emergency/current-advisory

CBJ recommends residents in Behrends Ave. avalanche path to evacuate; evacuation center at Centennial Hall opens at 8 p.m. tonight: Juneau’s Urban Avalanche Advisory will transition from High to Extreme tonight as avalanche danger continues to increase over the next 24-36 hours. Due to the potential for historic avalanches should the Behrends Avenue Avalanche path release at full width at the depth of snow instabilities, CBJ Emergency Management is recommending residents in the Behrends Avenue path to evacuate. As the storm continues and transitions to rain today, danger levels will increase.

CBJ and the American Red Cross of Alaska is opening an evacuation center at Centennial Hall tonight, February 27, for those living in avalanche zones. It will be open from 8 p.m. tonight into tomorrow morning. COVID-19 mitigation measures will be in place at Centennial Hall. By mid-day tomorrow, danger levels should start to subside, though CBJ will continue to monitor the situation closely and share information as necessary. The Urban Avalanche Advisory is updated daily: bit.ly/CBJavalanche

The Behrends Avenue avalanche path is the neighborhood directly above the Breakwater Inn, a horseshoe area of houses between Glacier Highway, Behrends Avenue, and Ross Way; adjacent to Highland Drive. While the other urban avalanche paths also hold danger, the depth of snow in the upper Behrends path is particularly concerning. To see where the Urban Avalanche Zones in the community are, go to juneau.org/emergency/avalanche-resources and click on the “Avalanche Path Maps” tab.

Please avoid the Flume Trail and limit time spent in other avalanche paths. For the next 24-48 hours, natural avalanches of great size are likely. While CBJ, with the help of partner agencies, monitors potential natural emergencies, it is up to individuals and families to be aware of the hazards that exist nearby and be properly prepared for any risk to safety or damage those hazards may cause.

For a more detailed description of the avalanche danger, read today’s Urban Avalanche Advisory bit.ly/CBJavalanche. For more information, contact Emergency Program Manager Tom Mattice at 209-9207 or [email protected].

Due to some cancellations, we have a couple of spaces available on our upcoming SheJumps Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue course. Please email me if you are interested in taking one! [email protected]

This introductory course involves a day of 'dryland' skills training at sea level, followed by a day of on-snow practice in the local backcountry. Backcountry travel will be limited and we will not travel to the glacier.

There is minimal gear that you must provide (harness and carabiners). We ask students to watch about an hour of free online videos to help prepare for the course, and learn some basic knots.

Juneau is home to some amazing pow pow this week.. but rider beware!

This new snow is sitting on a complex variety of old surfaces from surface hoar and facets to old wind slabs. There were several rider triggered and natural avalanches in our region today.

Be patient and play safe, more snow is on the way!
