I think as a fitness creator and trainer it can seem like I’ve got it all figured out. No food fears, no lingering trauma; no insecurities. If I post myself everyday and have a stereotypically “fit” body I must feel amazing!

And it’s not that I don’t recognize my privilege. But I also know how many people think “once I have the body, the finances, the XYZ - then I’ll be happy”

There is no state where you won’t be insecure. If you lose or gain the weight, dye your hair, get lash extensions, tattoo your brows, etc. it doesn’t matter. You will find something new that bothers you because we live in a society that sells you your insecurities back to you to make money off of you.

It’s normal to have some hesitancy about food sometimes. To worry about your body sometimes. To dislike your bone structure. To worry you’re falling behind. There is no time in your life you won’t experience something like this.

The best thing you can do is recognize the thought and watch it pass. Sometimes foods scare me. I see that. And then I eat it anyways. Sometimes I wake up bloated and wonder if I’ve gained a ton of weight. I see that. Then I let it pass. The idea isn’t to become perfect or to wish away any insecurity. It’s to recognize it’s human and not let it control your life.

There is no state of perfection as humans. But there is a state of “I’m doing what I can and I love myself enough to let the places I’m still working towards inspire me rather than frustrate me.” And further, that our physical insecurities are often not fixable (see bone structure, face shape, etc) and if we fixate on them too much we miss all the other joys of being alive.

If you had told me nine weeks ago I still wouldn’t be back to normal I may have rolled right out of that hospital bed into the forest never to return. But anyways. We’re still not out of the woods yet. Will have more updates soon but for now here’s an update on my ACL tear and some more info on how I recovered and what I’ve been doing to protect my mindset!

In the last few years as I’ve embarked on becoming more “outdoorsy” I’ve been met with a lot of opinions. Whether it’s about being properly “in touch with nature,” what to be scared of, whether it’s proper to just stay in a hotel sometimes, and what to wear - the outdoors community is sometimes less welcoming than you’d expect.

It’s fine to be scared of the outdoors. The threats are real. It’s fine to thrift clothes, to not match, to rewear items that work well.

The only thing you have to do to be outdoorsy is go outdoors. :)

I think ladies in particular underestimate how much weight you have to GAIN for your dream physique. since 2021 I’ve gone from 120ish lbs up to 170lbs and then back down to 150-160. Building muscle is a long slow process that takes not only protein but also a ton of carbs. It takes insanely heavy lifting and years of dedication. You won’t become bulky by accident, and most likely the girls you look up to are heavier than when they started.

I have more “abs” and “definition” now, at a heavier weight, because there’s actually muscle to be seen.

You weren’t promised an easy life. You weren’t promised a long life. All you are given is the time you have - and none of us know how long that is.

It’s a fkn hard mindset (believe me, this injury has shaken what I once felt solid in) but it is the only one that really works. You MUST see every day, in all its horrors, as a gift. Not because your feelings aren’t valid, but because the alternative doesn’t change the circumstances, it simply basks in the sadness instead of the possibility of joy.

There are really only two options. Seek out the things you’re passionate about with intense desire and appreciation, or sit back and take the hits. The hits come either way.
