Pick up your gear the weekend before we close and pay for 1 week! This offer is good for REC Center members and Affiliates (Faculty, Staff, Alumni w/out membership pay surcharge). View our rentals at:

We're open this week for reduced hours, come before our closure and look for outdoor gear rentals coming soon...

[11/28/20]   As a reminder, the REC Center is closed through the weekend for Thanksgiving. See you on Monday!

Many of you may be aware of a new COVID cluster associated with UAS. The cluster is at seven cases. The individuals, all students living in John Pugh Hall, are isolating in the UAS residence hall. Close contacts, which includes staff members and students, are quarantining. The five newest cases were detected through a facility-wide testing effort on Wednesday, November 11. CBJ’s EOC tested 41 individuals – aside from the five positives, the rest were negative. Read UAS’s information release below.

While these students may have frequented the REC Center, due to our mask policy, distancing of equipment and people while exercising we can operate as normal, while cleaning used equipment every hour. This is an important reminder, be sure to continue wearing your mask, this will help to keep the REC Center open and operating when we need it most.

The Auke Bay polls are now open! Voting is available from 7am to 8pm, although I wouldn't wait as voting has been steady and certainly to pick up after 5pm. Students whose precinct isn't Auke Bay can still vote at the REC Center using a challenge ballot. More information at the Polls.

[11/02/20]   The University of Alaska Juneau campus (to include the rec center)will be closed for on-site operations all day (Monday November 2) due to extreme weather conditions.

Tonight’s creepy projection might make your skin crawl.

[10/27/20]   The REC Center policy on wearing a mask is clear and simple, you must wear one. This means a mask that covers both your mouth and nose. Masks are required upon entry, in common spaces, and while exercising in the gym, weight room, and running track/cardio deck. If a mask is not being worn you will be asked to leave. Depending on response this could be for the remainder of the semester. Let's all look out for one another and help to keep the REC Center open and healthy. If you're using the facility and spot someone not following policy you can ask them yourself or request help from a staff member at the desk, we are here for you!

Stormy night at the REC

Tonight's Halloween projection fits the evening.

COVID-19: Wearing masks while playing sports, exercising

The REC Center will soon require face masks while exercising. This is a recent recommendation of the Alaska Dept. of Health and Social Services. More information from DHSS at: This post was originally featured in the Play Every Day blog and developed in partnership with the department's COVID-19 response team.

Regular hours tomorrow for Indigenous People's Day at the UAS REC Center, 8am to 8pm. In the evening don't miss the display as you come and go from the REC Center!

Been thinking about getting out on the lake... this is the week! Rental rates at: #uasrec #uaslife

[09/11/20]   As a reminder on rentals, you may have one rental form for several items but you need a liability form for each person participating. The person on the rental form needs to be a member or affiliate (UAS fac/staff or Alumni & Friends Member). If not a member, be sure to include the surcharge for non-members.

[09/11/20]   The REC Center is closed this weekend due to being a National Guard closure. Have fun in the sun!

Weight room & occupancy

Today the weight room saw a lot of action. As you can see from the video, there are periods of time that are much ligher than others. Remember: Maintain distancing, only work out closely with those in your household/bubble, wear a mask when walking the halls, bathroom...etc. Our tags are being used, keep it up! When finished with a piece be sure to flip to red so staff can disenfect. See you at the REC!

The UAS REC Center would like to welcome Carmen to our staff. Some of you might know her from Student Activities Board.

Hello! My name is Carmen and I’m from Palmer Alaska. I’m a big fan of getting outside to hike, camp, ski, or frolic; but I’m also always down to have a cozy night in reading a book and drinking tea. I’m a third-year student studying Geography and Environmental Resources and my only plan after I graduate is to take a year or two off to learn how to surf somewhere hot and sunny. If you see me working, feel free to come say hi and swap book recommendations, corny jokes, and/or general balderdash.

Meet our other staff either in person or by visiting

The UAS REC Center would like to welcome Louise to the team!

Hi there! I’m Louise and I’m from Homer. This little hunk in my photo is my favorite little dude-Buddha. We love going on hikes and bike rides. In general I love being outdoors and exploring. Buddha and the environment are two of my all time favorite things. I hope to someday work towards protecting our environment through restoration and conservation biology. This is my first semester here at UAS and I am so excited to learn more about biology and environmental science and get to know this sweet little city.

Why Concept2 is an Option for Military Fitness Testing

The REC Center is proud to provide Concept2 equipment to our members! An ergometer is a device that measures work, and this is the foundation of the training equipment that Concept2 makes. We are honored that our equipment is considered of quality and standard for all of the new PT testing protocols.

University of Alaska Southeast

*Message from Chancellor Caulfield*

Dear UAS Community:

I want to express my deep appreciation to those who took the time to call in for public testimony today before the UA Board of Regents, and/or who've taken the time to send written comments to the Board (via [email protected]). Callers from Southeast Alaska included individuals from Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, and Craig.

Those who listened this afternoon heard perhaps 75% of the callers speaking against merging UAS into UAA or UAF. Many of our current students and recent graduates spoke in heartfelt terms about the quality of their UAS education, and the special care and advising that they received from faculty and staff. Their words were very inspiring and almost certainly had an impact on members of the Board.

In addition to faculty, staff, and students, callers included Mayor Beth Weldon from Juneau, Juneau School District Superintendent Bridget Weiss, Rep. Dan Ortiz from Ketchikan, and (last week) Senator Jesse Kiehl. Representative Andi Story told me that she was one of the 25 people remaining in the call-in queue when the two-hour listening session ended. I'm sure there were many more supporters of UAS in that queue. I've also seen letters of support for UAS from Southeast Conference, Sealaska, Sealaska Heritage Foundation, Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, City and Borough of Juneau, Ketchikan Gateway Borough, Juneau Economic Development Council, and many individuals.

I'm very grateful to Faculty Senate, Staff Council, student leaders, UAS Alumni and Friends, and our campus councils for getting the word out about speaking up in support of UAS. As noted above, there is still time to offer written comments to the Board by emailing [email protected]. Thank you all!

Chancellor Rick Caulfield

🐳 Listen to the UA Board of Regents Meeting, June 4-5:
Thursday, 8am-5pm and Friday, 9am-3pm
Agenda material is available via BoardDocs:

[06/01/20]   The University has moved to Phase B-Easing which allows for limited resumption of on-site operations that can't be conducted remotely. Recently the REC Center conducted a re-opening plan that combines protective measures of both UA and the State of Alaska. When we have the necessary protective measures and disinfecting supplies we hope to open to membership this summer. Sorry it has not been sooner as we've prioritized the safety of both our members and employees during this process. When we are close to opening we'll be posting our new rules both here, on our website, and at our doors. Until then, stay active!

Do you have a locker rental that's expiring soon or just need access to your locker's contents? Contact the REC Center at [email protected] and arrangements can be made.

Lightform highlighted our dance on their page. Can't wait to do it again!

Deploying Lightform for the First Time at the University of Alaska.
This is the first project created by Dave Klein for a Roaring 20's inspired dance, sponsored by the Student Activities Board at the University of Alaska Southeast UAS Recreation Center in Juneau. Dave lit the stage background using Lightform LFC. He learned a lot during the process, and overall the students seemed to enjoy the enhancement of their surroundings. Dave described the Lightform workflow as "simple but effective." We can't wait to see what he does for the next school dance.

Juneau Empire

I'm glad the UAS REC Center was able to host this event. It was shortly after this event that recreation centers and gyms around the state were ordered to close till April 1st. If we do open on April 1st, look for the announcement on this FB page.

SOA March 17 COVID-19 Health Mandate 003: Statewide Closure Restaurants, Bars, Entertainment

Due to the Governor's Health Mandate, the REC Center will be closing at 5pm on March 18th. The REC will remain closed till April 1st. Please read the information below provided by the State of Alaska. To prevent or slow the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), the State of Alaska is issuing its third health mandate.

Is it safe to go to the gym during the coronavirus outbreak?

Take a moment to read this article. The REC Center has closed its classes and has limited access to its current members with no guests till further notice. We remain open (11am-8pm) but that could change if factors in Juneau change.

"Using cardio or weight machines:

Be sure to wipe down the machine thoroughly with an anti-bacterial wipe (provided on cardio deck and weight room) before and after you use the equipment. Try to disinfect all surfaces. Keep your distance from other people." The advice may change over time as more cases emerge. It’s also important to follow local guidance since the outbreak is worse in some areas than others.

Please note the following policies in regards to REC Center access by students, faculty/staff and our Alumni & Friends members. These policies will be posted at the door and enforced for your safety.

[03/16/20]   The REC Center has discontinued its guest policy until further notice. Those using the facility must be members (faculty/staff and Alumni & Friends members) or current students at UAS-Juneau. Hours are 11am-8pm, Monday-Sunday.

Now that Alaska has a presumptive positive case of COVID-19, and this novel coronavirus disease has been defined a pandemic with community transmission occurring in many parts of the world, we're going to hear a lot more about "social distancing." It sounds complicated but all it means is try to keep a distance of at least six feet away from others whenever possible. Avoid large events or crowded public places, but that doesn't mean you have to stay home. You can go about your daily life; just don't get close to others or hold meetings in close quarters.

Lucky for us, Juneau's forecast looks beautiful in the coming days! This is a great opportunity to spend time outside in small groups. It's good for your health and one of the best ways to slow the spread of a pandemic. Learn more about how to prevent COVID-19 spread in Juneau:

[03/13/20]   The REC Center will be open next week during extended spring break from 11am-8pm daily. All large events have been cancelled to include Basketball Intramurals and events hosted at the REC in the Student Activities Center until further notice.

New gear coming to the REC. What better way to social distance than to get outside. Sleeping bags will now come with a compression sack, making packing in your backpack that much easier. New zero deg. bags on the way! #uasrec

Last game was a close one. Tune Squad won over the USCG, 98 to 96. Look for the Double Elimination schedule to be posted next week!
