are powerful and fast-moving channels of water that are difficult to swim against. Strong currents frequently accompany high surf and rapid tide changes and can be recognized as a turbulent channel of water between areas where waves are breaking.

This is a Civil Defense message for Tuesday 09-08-2026 at 09:31 AM.

The National Weather Service High Surf Warning for all south and west facing shores and High Surf Advisory for east facing shores of Hawaii Island remain in effect through today.

Due to the dangerous surf conditions and shoreline debris;

All State and County Beach Parks on west Hawaii, including Honaunau Boat Ramp, are closed today.

Beach-goers, swimmers, and surfers should heed all advise given by Ocean Safety Officials and exercise caution.

Kahalu\`u Beach Park
La\`aloa Beach Park
Old A's Strip
Kohanaiki Beach Park
And, Mahukona Wharf

As surf is forecast to possibly increase through today, be advised that other beach parks may close without notice.

🌀🌊 Due to storm surf conditions at Kahaluʻu, all HLSI surf classes are canceled through Monday as Hurricane Lowell begins to show its effects along our shores.

High surf, dangerous currents, and strong winds are expected to persist. Some beaches may close without notice.KNOW YOUR LIMITS.

Stay safe, listen to lifeguards, and heed all posted warnings.

⚠️ High Surf Advisory is in effect for the west facing shores of Hawaii Island and the south and east facing shores of all islands and through Sunday night.

As of 5:00 am, this morning, Hurricane Lowell remained a category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of up to 150 mph.
