Get Moving- With Adventure John

Shorts and a t-shirt yesterday, 5 inches of fresh powder today. Vermont is full of Adventure!

Another perfect morning for a fall hike. Waves of color everywhere. Get moving and get out bethey are gone:)

Hikesplore- Bamforth Ridge, Long Trail
Did an out and back, 10 mi. on one of my favorite fall foliage hikes this Saturday. This hike is awesome because of the terrain and the views. The ridge and woods trade places for the last couple of miles and when exposed, you’re treated to views of the valleys on both sides. They have wonderful maples that paint a gorgeous wave of different shades of red.
You can view this as soon as the second mile, or you can see it on and off all the way to Camels Hump. This year the colors seemed a little rusty, but still worth the effort.

Hikesplore Report- Mt. Mansfield
The clearest day of the season as I hiked Mt. Mansfield to the Forehead this week. Dry and colorful were the trails. Not quite peak foliage, but probably less than a week from peak. Conditions have been on repeat from the second half of the summer through the foreseeable future. Get moving up and be delighted by God’s creation. It doesn’t get any better!

Hikesplore Camel’s Hump Mountain-
The difference in firmness between a trail well travelled all winter is significant. This week, the Burrows trail provided sure footing and no post holing (vs the Maple Ridge trail last week) as it was well packed down. Toward the top there was an easy 8 feet of densely packed anow in places. Easy climbing with cleats through beautiful snowy woods. The sweet spot lately is around 11:00am. After this is when the trail changes and softens as the air warms. Getting down around this time will provide the best conditions:)

Springsplore! What a few days here in VT. ALL the adventure types are in play right now! Be very aware that the conditions at the beginning of your adventure may not be what you find toward the end.
Today we hiked Mt. Mansfield. The snow pack was incredible which made for some huge, apparently bottomless tree wells. Hiking up was fairly firm, but after a few hours of thaw, the post holing was much more frequent. Beware, the snow will turn to ice in a couple of days when the temps drop.
The real adventure today, and lesson learned, was that the small creek we crossed by rock hoping on the way up the mountain had turned to a raging river upon returning. We had to boot pack upstream a ways to find a safe crossing, which still involved hands and knees climbing the bank to get out.
All-in-all a 8/10 adventure rating:)

Skinsplore to enjoy Gods Creation. He doesn’t disappoint. What a fantastic day with friends. We had to wrestle the skiis, and board, up the hill at times, but so worth every hard minute.
