Pōwāwae or Football/Soccer is a sport that has been in Hawaiʻi for over a century. When it was first introduced to Hawaiʻi, there were several leagues that featured young athletes. During the 1907-1908 season of the “Socker League” the champion team was Kamehameha Association Football Team. The team was made up of all Kanaka Maoli and featured future Olympic swimming gold medalist and world renowned surfer Duke Kahanamoku in midfield. From then, the University of Hawaiʻi featured a soccer team in a few short stints between the 1920’s and 30’s and leagues remained throughout Hawaiʻi until the 1970’s. By the 1970’s soccer remained a well-renowned sport in Hawaiʻi but it was rare to hear about soccer, or any other sport in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language). 

During the 1977 season of the NASL, Team Hawaii was established and played home games at Aloha Stadium. The professional team was excited to participate and reside in Hawaiʻi in the shortest lived franchise of the NASL which lasted only a single season. Since then, soccer has remained a staple sport of Hawaiʻi producing several professionals that played in leagues all over the world. A few legendary Kanaka professional soccer players, climbed the ranks and played for the U.S. National teams. This t-shirt honors those legends of pōwāwae and hopes to inspire the next generation of soccer legend.
