What do you think about while you’re on deck?
Coach Monti - Stephen Montisano
I coach young ball players to accelerate their understanding of hitting so they can live their dreams
How often have you seen this: kid flys out to the outfield on solid contact. Runs back to the dugout and coach says stop dropping your shoulder. Kid proceeds to focus on his shoulder instead of timing and continues to get out.
How often have you seen this: kid on the team has had hitting lessons and hitting coaches for years but other players who haven’t had lessons and coaches are better hitters
How often have you seen this: Kid on the team has a terrible swing but they are one of the best hitters on the team.
Wow…what a sweet swing. Could you imagine if it was actually on time?
A beautiful swing at a bad pitch will result in a beautiful out.
I’m absolutely convinced that hitting mechanics are the third most important fundamental of hitting. Behind timing and pitch selection. You need mechanics to hit well at the highest levels of the game.
Hey coach I changed my grip.
Hey coach I changed my swing.
Hey coach I do this with my elbow now….Great, now get a good pitch to hit and be on time.
Get out of the weeds. Stop talking about all the nuances of the swing that you agree with or disagree with.
Instead, ask how can I get pitches ‘down the middle’ to hit?
Griffey’s swing was different from Rose’s swing. Both are in the Hall of Fame. They both mastered timing and swinging at good pitches
Im on many FB hitting groups and players and dads post a vid of their swing and ask for tips. They have no idea who is giving advice or who actually knows anything. The comments are always about mechanics never about timing or pitch selection
Many players get into a slump and ask their hitting coach whats wrong. They ask for a mechanical fix when they have a timing issue. They look at mechanics when they swung at 3 bad pitches. The fix: Pitch selection, timing, mechanics.
