Listen to legend Baseball Coach
Augie Garrido RIP

Good or bad, this style of coaching is now a dinosaur especially in high school.
Some of you back in the day had a coach like Augie. I did and I loved it.

It’s sad we are losing this type of coaching leadership because of our society keeps getting softer and softer. Sports used to be about competition & LIFE LESSONS when you set goals for yourself & as a team. We’ve become obsessed w/individuality because coaches don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings.
You hurt feelings, then the coach gets in trouble with the administration.

Coaching and the evolution of its styles over the years resonate with many who have experienced the shift in sports culture. Augie Garrido, a legendary coach, exemplified an era where tough love and direct, sometimes harsh, feedback were standard practices. This approach, while challenging, often instilled discipline, resilience , and a sense of accountability in players. Making players better people for their future.

In today’s environment, there's a significant emphasis on individuality and emotional sensitivity, which has led to changes in how coaches interact with their athletes. The need to balance motivation, constructive criticism, and emotional support has become paramount. This shift acknowledges that while some athletes thrive under pressure and tough coaching, others may need a different approach to unlock their potential.

Some players can take a tongue-lashing and some simply can’t.
In college, the ones that can’t probably enter the Transfer Portal.

Every coach has a different style of coaching kids when they need a wake-up spark.

Getting players motivated is the million dollar question for every coach because every player is different and how they need to be motivated.

A great coach will demand excellence, get in your face when you mess up and compliment the heck out of you when needed!
That my friend is COACHING 101

Some players love a foot up their ass to get going and some players go into a cocoon and pout if you yell at them along with calling mommy.

Some kids might have a troubled path, might not have a father figure at home and the last thing they need is a coach screaming at them because they might get the same treatment at home so a good Coach will find out what that player needs to excel.
Coaching in 2024 is light years different than coaching in 1990 or before..

Coach Augie had a dirty mouth, but damn, he spit truth with conviction. The message is invaluable in assessing or deciding if you are truly committed or not.

Who has changed more over the years?
Kids or parents????

What I’ve learned is kids will run through a wall if they love and respect the coach.

A parent who played sports gets that, lets the coach do his/her thing and parents who have never played sports and are raising an athlete, will struggle and will question everything.

In the end, whether through the lens of Garrido’s old-school methods or modern, more individualized approaches, the goal remains the same: to guide athletes toward their fullest potential and help them become better people.

The big question to you…did you have a coach in your life that made you a better person that you are today??
If you did, reach out and thank them! Coaches really appreciate a simple THANK YOU 🙏 08/08/2024
