Herzig engineering is a nationally licensed electrical engineering firm specializing in arc flash hazard analysis and electrical safety training.

We supply Arc Flash Warning Labels, NFPA 70E training, and PPE requirements.

Some of the most dangerous electrical hazards are the ones that look normal from the outside.

A panel can appear clean and operational while hidden issues develop internally through loose connections, aging insulation, or improper settings. That is why engineering reviews, maintenance inspections, and infrared scans are so important.

Visible condition does not always equal safe condition.

We still encounter facilities using arc flash labels that were printed before major electrical upgrades were completed.

New transformers, added loads, modified protective devices, and equipment replacements can all change incident energy levels. If the system changes, the study should change too.

Electrical systems evolve. Safety documentation has to evolve with them.

One of the biggest challenges in electrical safety is not always a lack of PPE. Sometimes it is complacency around using it correctly.

“We’re only going in real quick.”
“It’s just a simple task.”
“I’ll grab the heavier suit next time.”
Those small phrases are often warning signs that risk is being normalized.

Proper PPE is not just about wearing something rated for arc flash. It is about making sure the protection is appropriate for the task, in good condition, and used consistently every time. The right gear only works when workers trust the process enough to slow down and follow it.

One of the biggest misconceptions about electrical PPE is that higher-rated gear automatically means safer work.

In reality, overly conservative labels can create their own problems. Bulky PPE reduces visibility, movement, and comfort, which can increase human error. Accurate engineering studies help ensure workers wear the right level of protection instead of simply the highest category available.

The goal is protection backed by engineering, not guesswork.

We regularly review arc flash studies from other providers that contain major inconsistencies. Missing equipment. Incorrect breaker settings. Labels applied without proper coordination review.

Most companies assume a completed study means they are protected. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.

Quality control matters because workers rely on those results every single day.

Arc flash labels are everywhere… but that doesn’t mean they’re being used.

One of the most common things we see during audits and training is workers walking past labels every day without ever really reading them. Some know they exist. Some have never noticed them. And when we ask when they last used the information on one to make a safety decision, the room usually gets quiet.

A label only works if people understand what it’s telling them. PPE category, incident energy, shock boundaries; none of it reduces risk if the workforce was never trained to apply it in the field.

That’s why electrical safety programs can’t stop at installing labels. The goal is making sure every worker knows how to read them, trust them, and use them before the task starts.

One thing we consistently hear from clients is how much they value working with people who are willing to answer questions, explain findings clearly, and help teams better understand their electrical systems.

Infrared inspections are about more than identifying hotspots. They are opportunities to improve awareness, strengthen maintenance planning, and build confidence in the field.

Appreciate the feedback and proud of the work our team continues to do every day. Thank you Justin!

Test Before You Touch.
Live-Dead-Live testing isn’t just a best practice; it’s a requirement under NFPA 70E for verifying an electrically safe work condition.

✅ Test a live circuit (known source).
✅ Verify it’s de-energized (dead).
✅ Test again to confirm your meter is working properly.

At Herzig, we emphasize the importance of every step because skipping one can be the difference between safety and catastrophe.

Protect yourself. Follow the procedure. Go home safely.

Electrical safety training should never feel disconnected from the real world.

The best sessions include actual facility scenarios, equipment examples workers recognize, and conversations about the tasks employees perform every day. People retain more when the training reflects the environment they work in.

Compliance matters. Understanding matters even more.
