Algerian authorities recovered the body of a 10-year-old boy on Saturday after a four-day effort to rescue him from a well in the western province of El Bayadh.

The Civil Protection service announced in a statement that Ayoub’s body had been recovered.

“The Civil Protection service, together with local authorities, mobilized all human and material resources for this operation,” it said.

Ayoub fell into a dry well Wednesday in the village of Rekna, part of Ghassoul municipality in El Bayadh province, prompting a rescue operation that continued for four days.

Excavation of a parallel shaft was completed around midnight from Friday into Saturday, after which a Civil Protection officer descended to begin digging a horizontal tunnel toward the boy.

The fires in Algeria are still spreading. What gets lost in the numbers are the people — families forced from their homes, villages surrounded by smoke, animals with nowhere to run. 🇩🇿
