I wanted to share some ideas with you guys ahead of one panel this weekend at Triple Crown Sports Picklecon. When we talk about health and safety on the court Saturday, we need to look at all sides.
I am a local pickleball director and coach here in KC, presently with Genesis Health Clubs. I have a long time background in yoga instruction (ERYT-200 teaching since 2008) as well as degrees in chemistry and biology and Masters in Education and have always enjoyed how amazing and adaptive the human body is in responding to what we ask of it. I have been coaching since 2019 and have pursued the highest level of coaching with the ppr, level two professional. I am also safe play Certified and believe that as youth pickleball explodes we need young people to train and play smart, given that they could have 60+ years on the court ahead of them.
My personal coaching (and playing) philosophy stems from the idea that we can improve our game in three ways. Working with a coach to correct imbalances in technique or even unsafe technique, strength training, and flexibility work. I always start my groups with a dynamic warm up, but I observe that very few players invest in warm up, strength training, and flexibility work to help their game. We could throw in diet too but that beyond the scope of this post.
Many players believe a new paddle and YouTube videos are the key to leveling up. I hope to inform and guide players to be the healthiest, injury free, strong, and smart players out there on the courts, and off them too. Rest is certainly key as well when overuse and pain kick in.
