Tottenham went to Stamford Bridge and came away with a massive 2-0 win over Chelsea. Here are my thoughts on the match.
1. I really liked De Zerbi’s team selection today. He didn’t pick a side to try to hang on and come away with a draw. He was instead brave and picked a side to have a go at Chelsea, and boy did they ever. Tottenham had some shaky moments throughout the match, but they were definitely the more dominant side throughout the whole 90. De Zerbi got his tactics spot on today.
2. Mathys Tel. What a day he had. I thought he looked promising down the left in the first half. He missed a couple of guys making runs, but for the most part he had good link up play with Robertson. Tel improved on that in the second half and his goal was the exclamation point on the day. What an incredible individual effort for the goal that put the match to bed late. Definitely the player of the match for me.
3. Mateus Fernandes was really strong today. He worked really well with Tonali in the double pivot midfield. They both got up in the attack and came back to help defend well. Fernandes did good to get under Cole Palmer’s skin and got Palmer to lose his head. Great fight and grit from Fernandes today. I hope he uses this to help propel himself into a regular spot in the Starting XI.
4. Cole Palmer was going to inevitably be sent off. How he wasn’t sent off for his first yellow against Fernandes was shocking. Fernandes was working on getting up and Palmer used force to make contact with Fernandes’ head. VAR not getting involved in this situation was ridiculous and wrong. Palmer finally got what he deserved in the 80th minute getting sent off for landing on Gallagher’s leg. Happy karma worked out in the end.
5. Micky Van de Ven and JP Van Hecke did great to help create the first Tottenham goal. Micky was an absolute nuisance in the box on the corner coming in that cause the keeper to feel a little duress. Van Hecke did good at positioning himself to knock the keeper off his line without committing a foul. All that was left was a little luck to have an unfortunate deflection off the Chelsea keeper for the goal. Nice work by the big guys in the box to not make it easy for Chelsea.
6. Great overall team performance. I don’t think anybody on the pitch was bad today. Now hopefully the lads use this as a massive stepping stone to achieving their goals. Great step in the right direction today.
Next up: Home match next Saturday against Crystal Palace. Palace has been struggling lately and Spurs seem to have found their grove. Hopefully they keep it rolling next week. COYS!!!
