I want to recognize my good friend, Master Willian Diaz, Texas State Kickboxing Champion and founder of the Omega Free Fight Karate System!

I have had the honor of knowing Master Diaz for several years. We have trained together, exchanged techniques, shared our knowledge, and stood alongside one another in competition. I know firsthand how hard this man hits and the tremendous dedication he has given to the martial arts!

Master Diaz is a champion, a warrior, and an excellent instructor whose passion, perseverance, and fighting spirit are truly inspiring. His accomplishments are well earned, and his students are fortunate to have such a dedicated master leading them.

It has been a privilege to share the training floor, celebrate our victories, and develop a friendship built on mutual respect and a lifelong dedication to the martial arts.

To my martial arts friends, please check out Master Diaz and his Omega Free Fight Karate System!

Much respect, my friend. I am proud to stand alongside you, sir! 👊🙏

Balintawak: Stick & Knife Sparring Techniques | Filipino Martial Arts

In this compilation, students of Iron Wire Martial Arts demonstrate stick and knife sparring techniques from the Atillo Balintawak system, showcasing the principles of close-quarters combat, timing, sensitivity, counterattacking, disarming, and weapon control.

The Legacy of Great Grandmaster Crispulo "Ising" Atillo

Born in 1938 in Mambaling, Cebu City, Philippines, Great Grandmaster Crispulo "Ising" Atillo is the last surviving original member of the Balintawak Self Defense Club, established in 1952.

Raised in Cebu, the heartland of Filipino Eskrima, GGM Atillo trained under some of the most formidable eskrimadors in Filipino martial arts history, dedicating more than seven decades to preserving, refining, and teaching his remarkable system.

His father, Vicente Atillo, was a champion wrestler, eskrimador, and World War II guerrilla fighter who served with the United States Armed Forces in the Far East.

His godfather, Delfin Lopez, was also a WWII guerrilla, champion boxer, and highly respected eskrimador.

Growing up among these remarkable fighting men, GGM Atillo developed an exceptionally practical understanding of combat. His system emphasizes close-range fighting, deceptive movements, changes in rhythm, precision, and the ability to create openings through subtle manipulations of an opponent's attention and balance.

Throughout his extraordinary career, GGM Atillo has instructed members of the Philippine military, U.S. Special Forces, and martial artists from around the world.

This student demonstration represents our continued study and preservation of Atillo Balintawak — World Arnis-Eskrima Original (Saavedra Style), honoring the teachings, fighting principles, and remarkable legacy of Great Grandmaster Crispulo Atillo.

Mabuhay! Long Live Atillo Balintawak!

Pencak Silat: The Art of Shearing | The Village Madman

Shearing is a principle found throughout the martial arts in which two opposing forces move in opposite directions, creating tremendous pressure on whatever is caught between them.

In this demonstration, René explores the principles of Shearing and Reverse Shearing within Pencak Silat.

The shearing technique applies opposing forces, with one hand striking the groin while the other strikes the back of the head. Reverse shearing changes the direction of force, creating a powerful crank against the neck from the front. Both demonstrate how opposing movements can be used to disrupt structure, balance, and control.

The Village Madman's Silat

With over 70 years of experience, René is a master teacher whose life has been devoted to Pencak Silat, combat, human movement, anatomy, psychology, philosophy, spirituality, and instinct.

His journey began with the Navy's legendary Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT), the frogmen of the era preceding the modern Navy SEALs. He later traveled extensively throughout Indonesia, studying Pencak Silat with teachers from different villages and traditions. His path also crossed renowned martial artists such as Eddie Jafri, Rudy Terlinden, Victor and Paul de Thouars.

Over seven decades, René developed an extraordinary body of knowledge encompassing Langkah, Kilap Hands, Twining Hands, Serak jurus, foot traps, entries, weapons, sensitivity drills, and the deeper principles of human movement and combat.

But at the heart of René's teaching is freedom. He never wanted students to become copies of him. Instead, he taught principles and tools, encouraging students to experiment, improvise, understand, and ultimately create something uniquely their own.

This lifetime of exploration is what we call The Village Madman's Silat.

A master teacher. A teacher of teachers. The masters' master.

Learn the principles. Understand the tools. Then create your own art.

HING DAI PODCAST | Instinct, Tools & Muscle Memory: Deeper Combat (EPISODE 3)

In this episode of the Hing Dai Podcast, I am joined by fellow martial artist Matthew Lee as we explore the deeper principles of combat, instinctive movement, and the development of muscle memory.

What happens when instinct takes over? How do we train the body to respond naturally under pressure? And how do the tools and techniques we practice become part of our movement rather than something we must consciously think about?

Through discussion and live demonstrations, Matthew and I explore the relationship between instinct, repetition, body mechanics, and practical fighting applications.

Topics include:

Instinctive responses and natural human movement

Developing muscle memory through training

Understanding the tools of combat

Moving beyond memorized techniques

Applying martial arts principles under pressure

Learning to think for yourself in martial arts

The goal is not simply to collect techniques, but to understand the principles that make them work.

A special thank you to Matthew Lee for joining me, sharing his knowledge, demonstrating his martial arts, and contributing his experience and perspective to this discussion. It is always a pleasure to exchange ideas with dedicated martial artists who continue to explore and question the deeper aspects of their practice.

Among all the ancient texts, one of my favorites is the story of the great warrior Parashurama and his teacher, Dattatreya.

Parashurama had conquered the world outwardly.

Dattatreya, the Avadhuta—the Wandering Sage—taught him how to turn inward and question everything he believed himself to be.

Together they explore the mystery of waking, dream, and deep sleep—and the deeper question of what remains present through all three states.

The warrior who had mastered the outer world was now being taught to look within.

Their dialogue has endured as one of the great spiritual teachings of India—a warrior’s journey from conquering the world around him to discovering the nature of himself.
