10 Years of Rilion Gracie Katy Jiu-Jitsu
Today we celebrate a decade of dedication, discipline, and growth.
This milestone belongs to every student who showed up, pushed through challenges, trusted the process, and chose to grow on and off the mats. Your hard work is the foundation of everything we’ve built.
To the parents and families: thank you for your constant support, encouragement, and belief in our teaching system. Your trust allows us to shape confident, disciplined, and resilient individuals.
We express our deepest gratitude to the Gracie family, whose vision and values sparked a global movement that changed lives through Jiu-Jitsu. We are honored to carry this legacy forward every day.
Ten years is just the beginning.
With strong roots, a proven system, and an incredible community, there is much more to come. We move forward together—stronger, united, and ready to prosper.

Before belts… There weren’t always colored belts. In Japanese martial arts, progress was shown through licenses (menkyo), not visible colors.
Origin of the system. The ranking system begins in Judo. Jigoro Kano created the Kyu/Dan system to organize learning. At first, there were only the white belt and the black belt.
Arrival in Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-Jitsu inherits this system. In the beginning, there were few belts (only white, light blue, and dark blue), with a focus on self-defense and efficiency.
The original meaning. The belt indicated understanding and competence. It wasn’t about minimum time. It was a real level of mastery and skill.
Creation of federations. Federations emerge to organize championships. With that, the competitive side gains strength and starts influencing academy training (rules) and criteria.
Standardizing time. Minimum time enters the equation. Promotions start following official timelines. Progress stops being only technical observation.
The business model. Jiu-Jitsu becomes popular. In many contexts, the belt becomes a marker of attendance, time in the gym, and student retention.
Different people, same belt. Not everyone trains for the same reason. Hobbyist focused on quality of life. High-performance athlete. Hobbyist interested in competing. Does it make sense to measure everyone the same way?
The problem isn’t the belt. It’s thinking it means the same thing in every context.
What should graduation represent today? Real skill? Time in practice? The practitioner’s context? Or a combination of all of it? Leave your comment below.

January 31st is a special day for our academy. From 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, we are celebrating 10 years of Jiu Jitsu, community, and growth on the mats – and honoring the very first group of black belts from our academy.
This milestone represents years of hard work, consistency, and love for the art, and we could not be more proud of our team and students.

We’re updating our class schedule starting Sunday, January 12th.
Key highlights:
- Kids class is now at 6:00 PM daily
- Juniors (Jrs) class is now at 6:45 PM daily
Tuesday & Thursday blended class (Kids + Jrs):
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the 6:00 PM class will be a blended session with combined ages and techniques. This format is designed to help students improve focus and discipline by mixing ages, training partners, and learning styles—while still keeping the training structured and safe.
Little Champs (LC) – IMPORTANT:
We now have two separate Little Champs groups: T1 and T2.
Little Champs families must choose one track:
- Little Champs T1: Monday / Wednesday / Friday
- Little Champs T2: Tuesday / Thursday / Friday
Please make sure you select the track that works best for your family so your child stays consistent with their group.
If you have any questions about where your child fits best, reply to this email or message us and we’ll help you choose the right class.
See you on the mats,

When a martial art becomes only a sport, the ego stops being challenged and starts being fed.
Sport is important.
It brings visibility, competition, structure.
But it was never meant to be the main pillar.
Martial arts were created so the weaker could survive the stronger —
Through leverage.
Through intelligence.
Through strategy.
Through humility.
Most people don’t train to compete.
They train for belonging, discipline, confidence, and real-life resilience.
If we forget that, we stop forming people…
and start only producing athletes.
And that costs more than we think.
