El Niño has already left its mark around the islands in the form of hurricanes. We’ve been relatively lucky here in Kealakekua, our hearts are with the more heavily impacted areas around Hawaii 💞

But less easily seen impacts are starting to show on our reefs 🪸 The same warm waters fueling the recent hurricanes have started to take their toll on corals. We are starting to see some corals bleach, and bleaching is likely to continue through November.

This is why it is more important now than ever to make sure that when we view these areas, we do so responsibly! Use reef safe sunscreen!!! Keep a safe distance from corals to make sure you don’t stand or touch!!! Use designated entrances and exits from the water when available!!! Educate others!!! These small actions can help corals survive through these hard times
