We had ADA Training in Macon, GA on May 5, 2014. As always, we had a great time networking, sharing experiences and of course learning.
A message from our President:
Just a brief note about why we decided to form AMPTA
In May of 2007, Overland Park, Kansas held the first ever Permit-Technicians Institute. For 3-days Customer Service Specialist and Permit Processors came from all over the United States. It was very interesting for us as we learned a lot about what worked well (or did not work) for people in other areas. Discussions were held on office procedures, what type of permits were issued, etc. This opportunity opened our eyes to the importance of our jobs and how we can make our work area more efficient and share ideas with others in order to make the system work for everybody.
At that time there was not an association in the South East to help network and share ideas. Being motivated by what we had learned, we sent out surveys to nearby jurisdictions and found that we were not the only ones interested in getting together. Thus was the humble beginning of AMPTA!
AMPTA was begun with the goal to provide support and promote education through networking and professionalism in an attempt to obtain recognition of the permit technician’s value to the department through certification and education
AMPTA has offered me many opportunities that I did not have in my previous 11 years as a permit technician. During my tenure I felt as if I was considered a secretary, someone with little benefit to the municipality in which I worked. In 2007/2008 we found out Permit Technicians were more important than I ever imagined.
We now have the opportunity to Network together with others, not only in GA, but across the country. This has led to the opportunity to improve skills, training and earn certifications. More knowledge of how the system works leads to the opportunity to advance and grow in the system – I can become better trained in plan review, zoning, code enforcement, inspections, etc., leading to future promotional opportunities. This alone has given me a sense of achievement in what I do. I have also had the opportunity to become a leader, a role I previously shied away from.
What can AMPTA offer you and others? It depends on what you want out of it. If you are not afraid to get involved and help the association grow, you will have many opportunities open up for you. No association can experience growth and provide for its membership if those members are unwilling to get involved. Other Permit Tech Associations across the country not only provide opportunity for the members to become better educated, but also gives them the opportunity to become involved in the community through outreach programs (Building Safety Month, Habitat for Humanity and MUST ministries). This opportunity helps to build trust in the community instead of everyone being afraid when they see code enforcement personnel. It can offer an opportunity to educate the community on the importance of safety of public structures.
A strong association can also offer an opportunity to find a better way of doing things…you can be speaking with others that have improved on the permit process to make things less antiquated. When I first started permits were done by hand and copies kept in a book. Now, it is on computer, but hard copies are still kept in a file. Other jurisdictions have gone “paperless” and have a more seamless process for accepting and processing applications….
In short: The association can offer endless opportunity, if others are willing to step up to the plate and get involved. The association is for the membership to develop and grow and make their own opportunities.
Most successful men have not achieved their distinction by having some new talent or opportunity presented to them. They have developed the opportunity that was at hand.” – Bruce Morton
