Think sharks have to keep swimming to survive?

Not this one! Nurse sharks can breathe while resting on the seafloor by pumping water over their gills- one reason you’ll often find them piled together under ledges during the day… where the current does the work for them. Juvenile nurse sharks use mangroves and seagrass as nurseries, where they’re better protected from larger predators before heading to deeper reefs as they mature.

Built like a tiny underwater alien, but just doing crab things. 🦀 Spider crabs use those long legs to move through seagrass and blend into the bottom while they search for algae, small animals, and leftovers to eat. Nature made this one weird on purpose.

The ocean’s most peaceful foodie. 🩶

Manatees are slow-moving herbivores that spend much of their day grazing. Their secret? Thousands of replacement teeth over a lifetime to keep up with all that chewing. Being a manatee is basically an endless salad buffet with occasional air breaks. Adults can eat 10–15% of their body weight in aquatic plants every day!

Horseshoe crabs gather in shallow water to mate, with males clinging to larger females using specialized claws. Their eggs help feed migrating shorebirds, making these ancient animals an important part of coastal ecosystems.

The spotted moray eel is one of the reef’s best ambush predators. It spends much of the day hidden in crevices, relying on camouflage and lightning-fast strikes to catch prey. That opening and closing mouth is how moray eels breathe- by pumping water over their gills 🐍🌊
