The strength of a martial arts academy is measured by the quality of its leadership. Great schools are built by instructors who are constantly learning, growing, and leading by example.

Unfortunately, not every academy invests in its leaders. Some instructors are left without mentorship, without supervision, and without a clear standard. When there is no guidance, every professor teaches their own way, and the students are the ones who pay the price.

At Checkmat, we believe leadership is a continuous journey. Our professors are never alone. We are mentored, challenged, and developed by world-class leaders who understand that excellence is built through education, accountability, and humility.

Women’s Jiu-Jitsu should never be an afterthought—it should be one of the standards by which the quality of a school is measured.

A great academy isn’t defined only by the number of female students who walk through its doors. It’s defined by how many women stay, how they are supported, how they grow, and whether they are encouraged to become leaders, competitors, coaches, and role models.

Schools that truly value women don’t just welcome them—they invest in them. They create opportunities, organize women’s-only events, foster a safe and empowering environment, and build a community where every woman and girl feels she belongs.

On Maui, Checkmat Kihei and Pacific Jiu-Jitsu are proud examples of this commitment. Both schools were founded by IBJJF high-level black belt competitors who continue to lead by example. Even after years of competing and achieving success, they still step onto the competition mats alongside their students—not because they have anything left to prove, but because leadership is about inspiring others through action.

That is why we are incredibly honored for Checkmat Kihei to host Girls & Gi, a nationwide event that brings together women and girls across the country to celebrate, support, and strengthen female Jiu-Jitsu.

We look forward to welcoming the women and girls of Maui for another day dedicated to learning, friendship, empowerment, and growing our community.

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Sariah! 😊 I’m an ABA therapist and Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) working with children in Maui schools.

I’m excited to announce that SAAI Developmental Play Lab officially opens tomorrow and is located right here at Checkmat! 🎉

SAAI is a developmental play program for children 18 months to 10 years old offering:
🧸 Drop-in developmental play
🧩 Behavior support
📚 Tutoring
🚽 Potty training
🏡 In-home services
👨‍👩‍👧 Parent training

⏰ Hours: Monday–Friday 7:00 AM–3:00 PM and Saturday 12:00 PM–6:00 PM

💲 Drop-in play starts at $30/hour, and monthly plans are available.
