🇺🇸 A welcoming environment can make all the difference in someone’s Jiu-Jitsu journey—especially on their very first day.
Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming Tiare and Manu to their first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class. Like many beginners, they arrived with questions, doubts, and understandable nerves. Walking into a martial arts academy for the first time can feel intimidating, and for women, that feeling is often even stronger.
That’s why creating a safe, supportive, and encouraging atmosphere is so important. A person’s first experience on the mat can determine whether they return or never try again. At Checkmat Kihei, our Women’s Only classes every Monday are designed to help women learn, grow, and build confidence in a comfortable environment surrounded by other women.
The classes are taught by a female Black Belt with over 30 years of Jiu-Jitsu experience and a lifetime dedicated to the sport. Beyond teaching techniques, that experience includes years of high-level competition, understanding the challenges women face in combat sports, and helping students progress at their own pace.
Jiu-Jitsu is about much more than self-defense. It builds confidence, resilience, discipline, and lifelong friendships. We are proud of Tiare and Manu for stepping outside their comfort zones today, and we look forward to seeing their journey continue.
Everyone starts as a beginner. The key is feeling welcomed enough to take that first step
