🐾 New Board & Train — Meet Ranger!

Ranger was just dropped off this afternoon and is here with me for some socialization, impulse control, off-leash work, and overall obedience.

I’ve also noticed a little bit of reactivity from him, mostly when he’s in his crate. Every once in a while he’ll lash out and bark at the other dogs, but outside of the crate he’s really not too bad.

His interactions with the other dogs are a little awkward right now, but there aren’t any major concerns. Overall, he’s a pretty good dog who just needs some structure, exposure, and a little polish.

This is a pretty typical case for me and something I see on a regular basis. There are a handful of things that need cleaned up, but nothing that I’d consider overly concerning. I expect most of this to be gone within two weeks or less, and then it’ll mostly be rinse and repeat for a while—building consistency, reinforcing what he’s learned, and getting him out into the real world for plenty of exposure to different places, people, dogs, and situations.

Well… we had a somewhat interesting morning today. 😂

We got all ready for the event, loaded up, and headed out to the Farmers Barket. Everything was going great until Gus decided to get carsick on the way over, so we showed up with a stinky, nasty puppy. 🤦‍♂️😂 Not exactly the first impression I was hoping for!

We got him all wiped down and thankfully there was a groomer there who was nice enough to let us borrow some doggy cologne to help mask the smell. 😂

This is what I get for trying to be proactive and thinking I was being smart by giving him a bath the night before. Definitely didn’t go according to plan!

Despite the smell, we had a great time at the Farmers Barket. I got to talk with a bunch of dog owners, and give some information about Owl Creek K9 Training, and Gus was still somehow VERY popular. Apparently a little puppy funk isn’t enough to stop people from loving him. 😂

I’m still going to call it a success!

Oh, and apparently I also bought an event table that is too short for my banner… so I guess I’m getting a new event table now. 🤦‍♂️😂

All in all, not exactly the smoothest morning, but definitely a fun one! 🐾

🐾 Hey everyone, meet Stitch! 🐾

Stitch was adopted from the Cameron Animal Shelter and is here with me for a 30-day Board & Train to work through his anxiety, build his confidence, and help him become more comfortable with the world around him.

He’s also got a bit of a leash-pulling habit that we’ll be working on, along with obedience, off-leash training, and some much-needed socialization and exposure work. The goal is to get him to the point where his owners can take him out and about and actually enjoy their time together without Stitch spending the entire time worried about everything around him.

One of the first challenges we ran into was his first night here. His anxiety and fear of the new environment were pretty high, and he managed to break out of his crate three times! I ended up securing the crate door with carabiners and bungee ties to make sure he stayed safe.

Thankfully, he’s already calmed down quite a bit and seems much more comfortable and relaxed in his crate now. That’s a big step in the right direction this early in the process.

Stitch actually already has a decent foundation of obedience thanks to his owners, so we’ll be building on what he knows and working toward making those skills more reliable, including eventually off-leash.

He’s a really sweet dog. He’s just a little too worried about the world around him right now. That’s what we’re here to work on, and I’ll get him headed in the right direction. 💪🐶

Oh, and Stitch is also carrying a few extra pounds, so he’ll be getting a little slimmer during his stay too. He’s a hefty boy 😂

Gus and I will be at the Cameron Barket at McCorkle Park tomorrow from 9:00 AM–1:00 PM! 🐶

Added a new one to the lineup! 🐾

I picked up some Full Moon Air-Dried Dog Food to go along with my normal Caledon Farms Freeze-Dried Dog Treats.

The Full Moon food is technically made to be used as a regular meal, but it works really well as training treats too. Plus, it’s a pretty healthy option for the dogs.

They’ve been a HUGE hit so far, and all the dogs absolutely love them! 😂🐶

Highly recommend! 👍

🐾 Hey everyone, meet Gus!! 🐾

Gus is with me for a 30 Day Board & Train focused primarily on puppy training and helping him develop some better manners, impulse control, and understanding of the rules.

His main issues right now are:

• Jumping on people
• Light mouthing
• Stealing things he shouldn’t have and running away with them because he knows he’s not supposed to have them 😂
• Not really understanding the word “No”
• Basically zero impulse control 😂

While he’s here, we’ll also be working on:

• General socialization
• Leash work
• Recall
• Building a better grasp of behaviors he already knows
• Overall manners
• Threshold etiquette — waiting for permission before entering or exiting doorways, including his own crate
• Crating himself on command
• The art of being calm
• Balanced discipline and structure

Gus has already proven to be quite the character. He’s too smart for his own good, a little bit of a brat, and maybe just a touch manipulative. 😂 But honestly, that’s pretty typical of the really smart ones!

He’s a field-bred Golden Retriever from some great bloodlines, so he’s pretty much genetically engineered to be trainable — just the way I like them. 😎

I’m expecting big things from this guy, and I’m sure he’ll be quite an impressive young man by the time his 30 days are up!
