Shout out to the coaches who don’t just recruit talent…
they build it.

The ones who see something in a kid that nobody else notices.

The ones who choose the player who’s still learning, still growing, still trying to find her confidence - instead of chasing the already polished star from another team.

It’s easy to go after the spotlight.
It takes heart to invest in potential.

You stayed late after practice.
You hit one more bucket of balls.
You corrected mechanics with patience.
You reminded her that mistakes don’t define her.
You believed in her on the days she didn’t believe in herself.

And then one day - bottom of the last inning -
that same kid steps up to the plate.
Game on the line.
And she delivers.

Not just a hit.
Not just a win.

But proof that belief changes everything.

What you may never fully realize is this:
you didn’t just help win a game.
You might have changed the course of her entire softball career.
Maybe even her life.

Because long after the trophies collect dust,
she will remember the coach who chose her.
The coach who stayed.
The coach who believed.

And there is nothing more powerful than that. 🥎🔥

Some of the most damaging moments in a young athlete’s life do not happen on the field. They happen in the quiet spaces. In the car ride home. In the stands. In the tone of a voice. In the words spoken after a mistake.

This past week, I had a conversation with a young athlete who kept repeating the same sentence over and over. “I just want to be better for my dad.” Not for herself. Not because she loves the game. Not because she feels strong or capable. For him.

When we dug deeper, the pattern became painfully clear. One missed ground ball. One pop-up on front toss. One strikeout. And it is not just an internal voice that shows up. It is her father’s voice. Out loud. In real time. Repeated. Sharp. Public. Those words do not disappear when the play ends. They get carried with her. They become the voice she hears on the next pitch, the next rep, the next mistake.

You are no good. Maybe this sport is not for you. How many times does it take before you finally get it? What is wrong with you? Do you even want to play?

Parents, this is not motivation. This is conditioning.

Between the ages of 13 and 15, athletes naturally become more self-aware. Their cognitive development wakes up. They start evaluating themselves. They start questioning where they stand. That phase alone is challenging enough. But when we layer constant criticism, disappointment, frustration, and performance-based approval on top of it, we create perfectionism.

And perfectionism is not a strength.

Perfectionism creates fear.
Perfectionism creates hesitation.
Perfectionism creates burnout.
Perfectionism creates self-doubt.

Instead of playing free, she plays tight.
Instead of enjoying the moment, she plays scared.
Instead of trusting her training, she overthinks.
Instead of competing, she survives.

Not because she lacks ability.
Because she is afraid of your reaction.
Because she is afraid of disappointing you.
Because she believes her value is tied to her performance.

If your love, approval, or attention rises and falls based on results, she feels that. Every single rep.

You may believe you are pushing her to be great. In reality, you are teaching her that mistakes make her unworthy.

Here is the hard truth.
Athletes do not break because the game is too hard.
They break because the environment becomes unsafe.

If you truly want your daughter to thrive, the answer is not more pressure. The answer is structure, clarity, and communication.

Here are tools every parent should be using.

• Stop tying character to performance. Effort, attitude, preparation, and consistency are what matter. Results will fluctuate.

• Create an accountability plan. Sit down weekly or monthly and talk through goals, expectations, and responsibilities. This removes emotional reactions and replaces them with clarity.

• Decide in advance how you will communicate after bad days. No lectures. No disappointment speeches. No silent treatments. Ask questions instead of giving speeches.

• Hold her accountable without attacking her identity. Accountability is not punishment. It is guidance.

• Change your daily language. What you say at practice, at home, and after games matters far more than the car ride alone.

• If she does not complete her work or training, address the behavior calmly, not her worth.

• Remind her often that you love watching her play. That you notice her effort. That you respect her commitment.

• Ask better questions. What did you enjoy today? What felt strong? What are you proud of?

Some of you are adults in your 30s and 40s speaking to children in ways you would never accept from a boss, a coach, or a peer. Familiarity does not justify damage. Being their parent does not give you permission to erode their confidence.

An anxious athlete does not perform better.
A fearful athlete does not grow.
A pressured athlete does not thrive.

You get one chance to shape these memories.
You get one chance to shape how your daughter sees herself.
You get one chance to be the voice she hears when things go wrong.

If your primary goal is not helping her feel supported, confident, and safe while growing through adversity, then you need to ask yourself why you are here.

If this message hits close to home, do not ignore it. Awareness is the first step to change.
