Our little mermaids and nemos, the 4-5 years olds, working hard on their swimming kicks, streamline swimmer-in-training at the Kinston Community Center. Join us this summer for much fun in the sun, learning to swim, and having fellowship with others. I have a new partner, Suzanne Lane Nix, who will be assisting me this summer, and I am blessed to have her with all of her swimming knowledge and years in the pool. Some slots are still available for those who wish to learn this summer. Future sessions are June 15-25, July 12-22 & August 10-20! For information on dates and times and to register, see the instructions on the flyer posted here.

DIVE IN with us on May 20 from 10 - 12pm in Kinston, NC for a 2-hour swim clinic aimed to increasing water safety and basic swimming techniques to help youth feel safe and comfortable in the water. Swim 1922 is a national partnership with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and USA Swimming created to address the unfortunate truth that according to the CDC, approximately 10 people drown every day in the U.S.A. The goal of Swim 1922 is to strengthen USA Swimming’s commitment to diversity and inclusion by breaking down barriers, created by a lack of access and exposure, and expanding our footprint in the local community to increase swim participation and decrease drowning rates.

What a fantastic little swim fish Jackson Barnett is, and his dedication is unmatched. I love working with him and hope to continue to build his swim techniques over the summer. I am so proud of all of your improvements this winter season. Good Job, Jackson!

Note to Children & Adult Swim Groups: Be proud of yourselves, as proud as I am of you! I am so proud of the children and adult swim groups that have worked so hard all year to be professional swimmers! They are dedicated and resilient, have overcome the fear and anxiety of the deep water, and are now comfortable and swimming like fish! It is so rewarding to be able to be authentic, open myself up to my swimming views and values, be empathetic with others, and understand how they feel about their fears and reservations. I will miss them when our time is over, but I will have more to help and will be comforted to know that they can save their own lives while in the water in the future and have come so far.

How to Perfect Your Streamline and Swim Faster! 01/14/2023

What is the most important word in swimming? STREAMLINE! Let’s learn how to be a more streamlined swimmer. Read below and watch the video, link is at the bottom of this post.

How to Do Streamline:

Let’s break down the streamlined position into four sections: Hands, head, hips, and legs:

Hands: Stack one hand on top of the other. Wrap the top thumb over the bottom hand. Extend your arms overhead, locking out your elbows and squeezing your biceps to your ears.

Head: Your head should not extend forward past your arms, and you should not look forward at your hands. Keep your eyes looking straight down. Hint: if you can feel your ears on your inner arms, you’re doing it right.

Hips: Keep the core engaged and squeeze your butt. Think about becoming rigid like a pencil.

Legs: Squeeze your legs together and point your toes.

Swim Sets to Improve Streamline:

Give these swim sets a try to work on streamlining! You can do these in freestyle, backstroke, or butterfly.

Set 1: 4 x 50 Free or stroke
Kick halfway or 15m off the turn
Can also focus on a specific number of dolphin kicks off each wall (ex., five kicks off of each wall)

Set 2: 4 x 75 Free or stroke, build dolphin kicks by 25 (pick a challenging number for you).

Example:
1st 25: 2 kicks underwater
2nd 25: 3 kicks underwater
3rd 25: 4 kicks underwater
