This time of year can be full of gatherings, family traditions, joy, expectancy, and celebration. But all too often, we fill our calendars to the brim and miss the sacredness of the four weeks leading up to Christmas. In Latin, the word advent translates to “coming," and symbolizes the waiting-place between the already and the not yet. Nature teaches us that there is purpose to the cold, dark, and often bleak winter season. In the slowing, it can be a time of savoring, of rest, and of reflection. Augustine said, “my soul is restless until it rests in you, O God.” Perhaps God is inviting us to be intentional this Advent season for the sake of our souls. We have the choice to intentionally interrupt this busy season by shifting our focus to the God of love, to becoming the beloved, and to letting Love form our characters so that we can love others well.

One of the great things about being a human is there’s no ceiling to our potential. Our growth can forever keep continuing and evolving.
